Do I have to pay to use wordpress?

I’m getting my site back up and running after it being down for sometime. I set up hosting and got my domain through a host I know. I logged back in to wordpress and was given 2 options. Transfer my domain to wordpress or map my domain to wordpress. Since I would like to leave my domain at the host where I purchased it, I thought that mapping would be a better option for me. I choose the ‘map your domain’ option and it led me to choose a plan. Why do I have to choose a plan if I would like to keep my hosting and domain at its current location? I was under the assumption that WordPress was free open source software. Has this changed?

This is WordPress.com which is another place that hosts sites just like your unnamed host. If you want your site hosted with them then you don’t need to be here at all. You need to be reaching out to them for instructions on how to install the wordpress software for your site on their servers.
