do i have to purchase custom design to change the content background color

Elegant themes all appear to have white content backgrounds. yuck. do i have to also purchase the custom design kit just to change the content background? or is there something else I can do?

If not, Does anyone know of any nifty themes that are as grand as elegant themes and allow me to make this simple change?

    Thx!

No you do not. You can select and use a theme that has a custom background feature. But lets’s start with this just so you are clear. There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs and we cannot upload and install any third party themes into them at all. They are only for self hosted WordPress.org installs.

The only themes we can use on free hosted WordPress.com blogs are found here > Dashboard > Appearance > Themes and there are both premium (paid) themes and free themes that are found in that mix.

We have many themes here both free themes and premium themes that do have custom backgrounds. Click this link to find them http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/custom-background/

This is the link to the Themes Showcase http://theme.wordpress.com/ Note that all themes have theme description pages and a live demo site as well.

To change the content background (behind the content and sidebar) yes, you would have to have the Custom Design Upgrade. Many themes allow you to change the color of the body background (outside of the content area) at appearance > background in the dashboard, but I don’t know of any that have the option to change the content background color.

Also, you need to go back to settings > general and put in the title and tagline. You can then hide them at appearance > header. It is important to have the title and tagline so that the search engines can find it. They cannot read a title that is incorporated into a header image.

Thank you, both of you. So it looks like I’d be purchasing both theme and custom design just to make that one change on one blog.

I spoke to a support guy at elegant themes who says I can import third party things into their theme but, Timethief, you disagree.

So I’m still a little unclear as to what I can do with a theme that has some of what I want but not all. Since it looks like you can only use Thesis on WordPress.ORG, I’m still looking for baseline flexbility alongside the ease and multimedia of Elegant’s multimedia and business themes.

If you have any ideas besides purchasing both theme and design package, I’d be very interested to hear. Thanks so much.

At WordPress.com, you can change the background image or color for themes that support it using the Appearance → Background page. You can see a list of themes that have custom background support at http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/custom-background/

In addition, some themes may have color options built into the theme options pages. If you want to make changes beyond what you find in the Appearance → Background or Appearance → Theme Options pages, then you would need the Custom Design upgrade if you’re hosting here at WordPress.com.

We are also working on some cool color-related updates for later this year. :)

Ah, *content* background color. Right, you would need the Custom Design upgrade for that in almost all cases.
