Do I need a host?
-
I want to make a free little website! Everyone is talking about hosts.. Do I need one? or is it optional?

You did not specify a blog address or reason for posting when you created this topic.
This support forum is for blogs hosted at WordPress.com. If your question is about a self-hosted WordPress blog then you’ll find help at the WordPress.org forums.
If you don’t understand the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, you may find this information helpful.
If you forgot to include a link to your blog, you can reply and include it below. It’ll help people to answer your question.
This is an automated message.

If you are happy with the restrictions of being a free hosted blogger here at WordPress.com then you do not need to hire a web host.
If you insist of having FTP access, uploading plugins and themes, and wish to edit themes and templates, and you want to have advertising and affiliate links, and ecommerce transactions, then you do need to hire a web host and set up a WordPress.org install.
Read this entry carefully to understand the differences > WordPress.com vs WordPress.org
You can also read this article I will link to if you want to know what’s involved in hiring a web host and setting up a self hosted WordPress.org install.

I also note that your username is linked to a blog you deleted.
jessemichawood.wordpress.com is no longer available.
The authors have deleted this blog.If you would like to link your username to your active WordPress.COM blog it’s easy to do. Dashboard -> Users -> Personal Settings -> then scroll down to Account Details. Then scroll down to where it says ‘Website‘ select the URL for your primary wordpress.com blog and then save changes.
Now every time you sign into the forum we can all click on your username and your blog will be linked to it. And every time you leave a comment on a blog your username can be likewise clicked and your blog can be instantly located.

BTW did you read my answer to you in this thread? https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/can-someone-please-answer-my-question-below?replies=3#post-712616

Can someone explain to me step by step how to set up the email, because I tried it but not working. I managed to navigate my way through the entire process expect for these two concerns. Next time I rather use web hosting companies like Siteground rather than buying directly from WordPress.

Have you read the information here or not? WordPress.com vs WordPress.org: The Differences If not then please do that now as you will then have your answer.
There is an empty free hsoted WordPress.com linked to your usename and I suspect that is not the site you are referring to. If you are referring to a WordPress.org install then you are posting to the wrong support forum, and must post to this one as it’s the correct one for your software http://wordpress.ORG/support/
If you are still confused then simply post an active link starting with http:// to the blog in question and we can tell you instantly where to post to.

Thanks for responding so quickly. I started off with the free one and later purchased the one I am using right now. I read the link you provided and and understand the difference that was why I paid for it. I just want support on installing the plugins and setting up my email account.

What is the URL starting with http:// for the site in question?
I just want support on installing the plugins and setting up my email account.

That domain is not registered. Please be clear on what you are trying to do. Do you wish to purchase it and register it?
If so, then do you wish to purchase it through WordPress.com and have the site free hosted by WordPress.com or not?
If the answer is yes I want to purchase that domain, register it, and map to it from my WordPress.com blog then please read these support entries:

Okay now I understand what happened. You purchased a domain name and domain mapping upgrade but you did not carry through with the instructions to activate and Update the Primary Domain so the domain mapping is not in effect.
Go to 5. here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/register-domain/#instructions-for-registering-a-new-domain-for-your-blog
To activate your new domain, select the button next to the one you wish to activate and click Update Primary Domain. Your blog will be accessible from both of these domains; the Primary Domain is what actually appears as your domain within the address bar of web browsers. If you do not see your blog at the new domain immediately, please allow some time for the DNS changes to propagate.

You only paid for the URL and mapping the URL to your blog here. You still can’t use plugins, because that’s not a WordPress.ORG blog, it’s a WordPress.COM site.
We see all kinds of people who think they want plugins, who don’t really need them. What do you want the plugins to DO? There’s probably a way to do that here.
-
Raincoaster…I find you very assuming in your response.
I paid WordPress directly for my blog directly and it is not a free one, so I should be able to have plugins installed. Unfortunately there is none….If you have a way of fixing that let me know.

There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs. We cannot install plugins — period. This is clearly stated in support documentation which I linked to above when answering the Op’s questions.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/If you wish to have complete control over a blog, the ability to upload themes and plugins, and to edit themes and templates then your option is to hire a web host and get a free software install from WordPress.ORG and self host it.
