Do I need a temporary domain name?

I manage a parish council website that is hosted by the local authority with a domain name (from Easily.uk). I should like to redevelop a new site for the parish council in WordPress with which I have some experience, and, once it is a fit state for public consumption, to transfer our current domain name and cease using our existing site. In order to develop the new WordPress based site do I need to purchase a domain for use in the intrim and what is the best way to do this please?

    I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

    Hi there!

We will give you a free WordPress.com address while you’re building your site here. So you don’t have to purchase a domain right away if you don’t want to. :) You can register/transfer/connect your existing domain whenever you’re ready. Until then, your site can be accessed with the WordPress.com address you choose/get when creating your site.

Have you had a look at the WordPress.com plans? If not, feel free to let us know more about the site you’re building. Are there specific features you’d need on your site? We will be happy to suggest a plan for you once we know more about your site requirements.

    Thanks!

Thank you for your reply. Re the site name that’s good to hear. I’m fine too on deciding which plan to use eventually, once I have a demo site running to gain agreement from our local councillors. One issue that I have is that I really cannot get my head around the block editor. I found it a cumbersome pain to use before (I changed jobs so my last use of WordPress was 2019) but now it seems I cannot get away from it and it forever seems to prevent me doing what I need to do. I guess I’ll search for some tutorial but I’d really not use at all and go back to the original editor.

    Hey there,

    Many thanks.

I agree, this is quite a change. This is a great set of tutorials to get started with: https://wordpress.com/support/video-tutorials/using-the-block-editor/

    I hope this helps.
