do i need a wordpress plan for a godaddy domain?

Please help me. I want to be monetized but couldn’t afford yet the monthly plans on wordpress. If I buy GoDaddy Domain, will I not need to buy a plan on wordpress to use the domain?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Note that monetization is possible on WordPress.com only from the WordPress.com Premium plans.

If you want to monetize your site at lower costs, you will have to get started with self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org). This guide can help you to move to a self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) from a WordPress.com if you have one already. https://move.wordpress.com/

Note that self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) risks your website’s uptime and maintenance at your expenses and efforts, while being with WordPress.com is easier because WordPress.com offers quality uptime and easier maintenance.

To clarify, if you buy a domain with GoDaddy, you can rent a server with any web sever provider, and install WordPress as mentioned on this guide. https://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress

I hope this helps. Feel free to get back if you have questions and I will be keen on helping you through it!

  • Hi there,

Even if you buy your domain from GoDaddy, you’ll still need to buy a plan to connect the domain to your WordPress.com site, so then you’ll actually need to pay us AND GoDaddy. Connecting a domain bought elsewhere to a WordPress.com site requires the domain mapping upgrade.

Your other option is to set up a site using the open source WordPress software, as @strikebuys suggested, but that’s still going to cost you money, as you’ll need to pay someone for hosting and a domain. You will be able to find hosting on the web for cheaper than our plans, but with traditional hosting you get what you pay for.

The cheaper your plan, the less storage space you will have for your site (your entire site, not just your media library – we limit only media storage, not site storage), the less bandwidth you’ll have which means a cap on the amount of traffic you can receive ( WordPress.com has unlimited bandwidth even on free sites), and cheaper hosting plans generally mean no security, no backups, and no support. But it’s definitely an option if you want to consider this.

Hi there, hope you don’t mind me jumping in on monetizing.

There are a few ways you can monetize your WordPressdotcom site including affiliate links, sponsored reviews, selling digital or physical products and WordAds. Our support guide on monetizing your site explains in more detail.

Only the WordAds program requires you to have a custom domain on your WordPressdotcom site. If you upgrade to Premium or the Business plan, your site is automatically eligible for the WordAds program. If you go with the Personal plan upgrade, you can submit your site to be included in the WordAds program. More detailed information about WordAds can be found in the FAQ on their website. https://wordads.co/faq/

With WordAds your site will need many thousands of impressions per month in order to earn from the program and much depends on where your visitors are from and what ads are displayed. It’s my understanding from earlier forum threads here that advertisers are paying less per impression than previously.

So your first decision should be what option suits your needs. On GoDaddy, you can use the free WordPress software, but you’ll be paying GoDaddy for domain registration and hosting your site. If you choose to set up on WordPressdotcom and want to be eligible for the WordAds program, you’ll need an upgrade plan here to do so.

Knowing more about what you can do with each option may help you decide. Here is a support guide that explains some additional differences between hosting your site on WordPressdotom and setting up a your own standalone WordPress install on another web hosting provider: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

So hopefully between the three of us (and I realize there is some overlap) we have covered your question, but let us know if you need anything else.

Jumping in with a developer standpoint.

You are going to get way better WordPress specific help from WordPress.com. If you want to spend most of your time creating content (which is what makes you money) than working on your site (which is what makes me money) then go with the hosting that has better service and pay for the level of service you need, it is cheaper than hiring me. I am also not a fan of GoDaddy for hosting, I would choose a WordPress specific host like WordPress.com or wpengine, one that knows WordPress. Just my 2 cents
