Hi there, if you sign up here at WordPress.com, then the site is hosted here for free. What you would be paying for with either a Premium or a Business upgrade plan are additional features. https://wordpress.com/pricing/ The Business plan is currently the only plan that offers ecommerce plugins.

If you want something even simpler, with either the Premium plan or the Business plan, you can insert PayPal buttons. More on that here: https://en.blog.wordpress.com/2017/08/17/now-add-a-simple-payment-button-to-your-wordpress-com-premium-or-business-site/

If you choose an online store at sign up, I believe that link might still be directing to setting up a ecommerce site on Pressable, which is separate hosting and includes a full ecommerce site. Just to make sure of the particulars, I’ve tagged this thread for Staff input.

  • @justjennifer — you’re correct. At some point we’ll likely stop rerouting there and just direct folks to a business plan.

@monti1122, our service supports e-commerce, or you can host your own self-maintained copy of WordPress.org elsewhere. Let us know what you’d like to do and we’ll do our best to point you in the right direction.

@supernovia-thanks for the clarification re Pressable vs the Business upgrade plan. :)

I’m paying for a business account, but am unsure if I also need to purchase hosting from another service like GoDaddy or something comparable. I’m working with a developer to get my site the way I like it, and they’re saying I need hosting to make everything work. I thought paying for the business plan would enable WordPress hosting as well? Does it not?

  • Hi @gibsonjsh, sorry I missed this earlier. Know if you have a business plan you can get direct support.

You don’t need a separate host, though your developer may prefer that if they want to use SFTP. Can you gather their questions and get in touch with us here?

How do I get to the business plan signup then without being redirected to pressable? When I click “start with business plan”, it redirects me to a page with three options – start with a blog, start with a website or start with a portfolio. I actually want an ecommerce business plan that allows my upload my plugins, and as well receive support, but this option does not show up. This is really confusing!

  • Hi @czarbsn, choose the business plan, then choose a website. You’ll be able to add e-commerce options after that.

    Thank you :)
Are there plugins that run on only wordpress.org self hosting that cannot work with the wordpress business plan? There is a plugin which I am about to purchase which works well with the self hosting plan, but has not been tested yet with the business plan. Are there likely to be any issues with compatibility?

  • There are a few plugins that don’t work well here, typically ones related to security / backups since we’re already doing that as well.

If you want to list specific plugins we can check, or you’re welcome to start a business plan then cancel if you need to. Aside from any new domain name purchase, the plan is refundable for 30 days. The domain part is refundable for 2 days.

It is an ecommerce plugin that automates a suppliers stock inventory with my shop seamlessly. A bit like oberlo but not oberlo (probably better than oberlo actually) although it requires a cron plugin to work with it alongside. I would have loved to list the name of the plugin but not on this public platform.

I would have preferred to check for its compatibility before I purchase the business plan please. Please can I send the name of the plugin to you via any other means? I would really appreciate this.

  • OK. I don’t know that a cron plugin would work here since you still would not have access to other server settings like a traditional host.

I will email you though for the name of the plugin so we can double check.

Okay. Just to mention that you do in fact have cron plugin already in your list of plugins which can be downloaded from your plugin store. I would be surprised if you have plugins in your store which do not actually work

  • Not all WordPress.org plugins are compatible. If you’ll respond by email with the plugin name we’ll help there.
