Do I need to delete my wordpress.com account because I transferred hosts?

I am confused on what I should do next. I had a wordpress.com account and then I bought my domain name from godaddy and eventually transferred my hosting to hostgator.com.

I have already paid for hosting through WordPress.com, but now I need to cancel it. I got on the chat with hostgator.com, and they told me to delete my wordpress.com site, but that seems like if I do that, I’d lose my content?

I’m so confused on this process and hope someone can explain it to me!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You don’t need to delete your WordPress.com account. Perhaps they meant that you should remove any WordPress.com related name servers from your custom domain name and add Hostgator name servers instead. You can do that through the registrar where you purchased your domain name.

Regarding your WordPress.com blog, I would recommend either redirecting the traffic to the new domain or making the blog private (pick one or the other). If you choose one of those things, you will always still have access to the past content via the WordPress.com blog dashboard.

If you had a domain mapping applied in the past, a redirect will work automatically once your new domain is setup and working at Hostgator. Just setup the domain to work with your new hosting, and you should be all set.

Don’t I need to cancel the hosting with WordPress.com, though? I changed the name servers during the first part of my transfer, so that is all taken care of.

Hosting is free at WordPress.com – no need to cancel a free service – and if you keep your old blog here it will be waiting for you if you find a new use for it. If you delete the blog then the content goes away and the name can never be used again even by you.

There is a difference between your blig and your account. WP accounts cannot be deleted, something that is very strange in and of itself.

I checked your soiwanttowrite account again, and I see that you removed your domain mapping upgrade from the WordPress.com side. That means the old blog http://literallyjen.wordpress.com/ is now visible to users separately and won’t redirect to your new web hosting account.

You have a few options to choose from now:

    1. Add a site redirect if you want to forward traffic from http://literallyjen.wordpress.com/ to your new domain.

    2. Make http://literallyjen.wordpress.com/ private so you still can see the content if you log in to WordPress.com but block other people from seeing it.

    3. Delete http://literallyjen.wordpress.com/ permanently.

It’s up to you which option you’d like to pick.
