Do I need to map my site or transfer it to wordpress?
-
Our site is currently hosted by a small communications company that also hosts our email services. Does that mean that our domain name is registered there or is it possible that it’s registered with another company? For the new site that I’m in the early stages of building, I’m trying to decide if it’s best to transfer the domain or map it

Hi there!
The domain may be registered with a different company than the one hosting your site.
For the new site that I’m in the early stages of building, I’m trying to decide if it’s best to transfer the domain or map it
That all depends on what you prefer.
If you have a custom domain registered elsewhere and you purchased one of our paid plans, you can use that domain with your WordPress.com site. You can either map it – your domain will stay with the current registrar and you’ll need to go to their site to manage anything domain related.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/You can also transfer the domain to WordPress.com and we’ll be your new registrar. This way you’ll manage everything from one place and you’ll be able to reach support with any domain related-issues :)
Let me know if you have any more questions regarding that.

Okay great that’s helpful.
One further thing to clarify. If I transfer the domain to wordpress, can the company that we currently use for hosting the site/email continue to provide those services for us? I’m new to these topics and I’m trying to determine if there is a difference between a registrar and a host.

Yes, there’s a difference. You need both an active domain registration and an active hosting plan in order for your website to work. Those two things, however, do not need to come from the same supplier.
Unless you plan to use WordPress.com as your hosting provider too, there’s no point in moving your domain to us to take over as the registrar. I would just leave it where it is at now, to be honest.
However, I think that there might be some confusion happening in the understanding of what we do – which is a managed hosting environment from WordPress.com. And, using the open source WordPress.org software. These are 2 different versions of WordPress.

I’m charged with redesigning our site. We want to keep our current host if possible and redesign the site using wordpress. It seems to me that using wordpress.org is the way to go. Do you agree?
-
Yes, if you want to stay with your current host, you will not need a WordPress.com site where hosting is included.
