Do I Need to Re-Purchase "Site Redirect"???
-
Hey there. So. Waaay back in the day, I originally started with a wordpress.com blog at this free domain: http://domesticatingkate.wordpress.com.
Then, a year or two later, I bought the domain Domestiphobia.net through WordPress and, if I remember correctly, had to purchase the “site redirect” to get my page to point to that URL (which was still hosted by WordPress).
Then, maybe 6 months or so ago, I decided to switch to self-hosting. I successfully exported my blog content and imported it with my new host, then changed the name servers and transferred my Domestiphobia.net URL hosting to my new web host.
Everything seemed to be working fine and all of my old Domestiphobia.net posts automatically redirected to my new site. But now, all of a sudden, I can get to domesticatingkate.wordpress.com again. The last post is the post before I switched to self-hosting. Is this because my “site redirect” expired? Am I going to have to continue to pay for this forever just to get my old content to the new site? I thought the export/import process took care of that.
Please help! I’m obviously not very bright when it comes to this techie stuff so use small words. Ha. Thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
I flagged this thread for Staff attention. Not to worry as they will assist you with sorting this. -
If you bought domain forwarding to send traffic from your http://domesticatingkate.wordpress.com/ to your custom domain name http://www.domestiphobia.net/ – the forwarding is good for a year
It looks like you might have had domain mapping to map domestiphobia.net to your domesticatingkate.wordpress.com – the domain mapping is also only good for one year
Did you have Domain Mapping or Domain Forwarding? Or did you have both?
At this point using domain forwarding to send visitors to your domesticatingkate.wordpress.com to domestiphobia.net would probably be the best – then any bookmarks and search stuff to your WordPress.COM blog would get sent to your domestiphobia.net site automatically

@timethief: Thanks!!
@auxclass: I think I had “domain mapping.” What’s the difference between that and “Domain forwarding?” I knew it was good for a year, but I figured once I switched to self-hosting, imported all of the content, and switched the registrar to my new host, it would all be on that new site. Which actually, now that I test it, it IS. So for example:
http://domesticatingkate.wordpress.com/old-post-url works, as does
http://domestiphobia.net/old-post-url.This leads me to believe that I may need to go back and manually change all of my past links to the new domestiphobia.net url address, OR re-purchase domain mapping/domain forwarding/site redirect in order to keep readers on the NEW site?
Argghhhh…..

DON’T MESS WITH ANY LINKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Domain mapping turns your domesticatingkate.wordpress.com/ to show domestiphobia.net/ in the browser window when they visit your blog – it is used when you have a WordPress.COM blog
Domain Forwarding is when you leave WordPress.COM and want to send visitors automatically to your new site that is not at WordPress.COM – the links are preserved if you have set up your outside site correctly (it is in the Perma-Links settings of your blog that is not here)

Okay, thanks for clarifying the difference between the two. However, it still doesn’t, to the extent of my (admittedly limited) knowledge, explain why this is happening all of a sudden? Or maybe it was happening before and I didn’t realize it.
Based on what you’re saying, it sounds like it was fine that my domain mapping ran out. But now I need domain forwarding to ensure people still can’t visit my old site? And, if I don’t change my links within my new site to ONLY take people to my new site, I will need to pay for domain forwarding forever…?

Domain Mapping and Site Redirect must be renewed annually.
In this case, you’ll need to purchase a new Site Redirect upgrade: http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/

After you purchase the domain forwarding – set your Pages and Posts to Private – make one Post for the front page like you already have – but put the date of your move – request they update their bookmarks and then have a link to your new site – after a couple of years most everyone should have things updated and most of the search engines should be updated – then if you decide not to renew the domain forwarding – the go to our new place will be automatic and no search engine will index the old site because there is nothing to index
