Do I need to upgrade my site?

  • Unknown's avatar

I currently have a free theme WordPress blog/site. I want to enable custom CSS to make a few changes and have decided to host my site through WP Engine.

    Here are my questions:
    1) Is it possible to use custom CSS on my current free themed site?
    2) If not, do I have to upgrade my site to a Premium site to do this?
    3) If I have a premium site with wordpress.com can I host on WP Engine?
    4) If I need to move over to wordpress.org, can I still use WP Engine?
    5) If I need to move to wordpress.org, what fees are associated with this? Do I still have to upgrade to a premium plan to use custom CSS?

    Hello!

Custom CSS is indeed part of the premium/business plans. It is still a wordpress.com blog, so you do not need to find a web host (WordPress.com hosts it for you). Only if you move to a self-hosted wordpress.org site would you need to find a web host like WP Engine.

So you can either upgrade to a premium wordpress.com plan OR you can move your site to a self hosted wordpress.org site (the move is free, but you would have to purchase a domain + monthly hosting fees).

Have a look at the cost differences here

    Hope this helps!

    Hello,

    1. No.
    2. Yes. More details here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-css/
    3. No, you WordPress.com site will be hosted on WordPress, you do not need another hosting provider.
    4. Yes.
    5. With self hosted WordPress, you don’t need to buy any plans but I’m not sure if WP Engine have their own service terms. For help regarding self-hosted WordPress, the correct forum to go to is this: https://wordpress.org/support/

For a comprehensive explanation of differences between the two versions of WordPress, see this: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    Hope this helps
