Do I need to upgrade to WordPress Premium in order to activate a premium theme?

  I have already purchased my domain name through WordPress and am now interested in upgrading my theme to a premium theme that offers more customization options. However, I notice that there is an option to also upgrade my account to WordPress.com Premium. Given that I am still relatively new to WordPress, I need to know whether it is a requirement to have a premium account in order to install and customize a premium theme. I am not interested in VideoPress or the increase in space, I am just interested in keeping my free hosting and increasing the customization options of my site design.

  Hi there,

  The two are unrelated. You can purchase any premium theme without the premium upgrade. :)

  You might also be interested in the Custom Design upgrade on its own (which is $30 per year) which will let you change the fonts, colors, and edit the CSS of any theme (premium or free):
