do I need web hosting service?

  • Unknown's avatar

I bought a theme from Northeme to use with my WordPress Premium in order to set up a blog/website. The support at Northeme said I need a hosting service. What do you recommend? I’m on very unfamiliar territory, and thought hosting was included with WordPress (still not sure…).
    Please help!

    Hi there,

WordPress.com is a hosting service, and we host your site here: http://munromunromunro.com/

However, themes can’t be uploaded to WordPress.com sites. That’s a feature of self-hosted WordPress sites using the free software from WordPress.org. (You can learn more about the differences here: WordPress.com and WordPress.org)

Sites hosted here at WordPress.com can use any of the free or premium themes offered in our theme showcase here: http://theme.wordpress.com/

If you let me know what theme you were hoping to use, I can help you find a similar theme that’s available here at WordPress.com. You can also suggest new WordPress themes that you’d like to see at WordPress.com in our themes forum:

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

Thanks. The theme I bought is Centreal from Northeme (I may still cancel it and get a refund). How do I go about “marrying” the Centreal Theme with my WordPress stuff, or would it be best to opt for a theme from wordpress?

My aim is to have a “website” for an artist, so I want to load his paintings, info, upcoming exhibitions etc. on the site.

The Centreal theme isn’t available here at WordPress.com, so if you’d like to keep the site hosted here at WordPress.com you’ll need to choose another theme. We have quite a few portfolio-style themes you might want to consider, since those tend to be good for featuring artist portfolios. One that comes to mind is Publisher, since that has some things in common with the Centreal theme, but you can browse our theme showcase to see what other themes are available here. :)

    Hi Rachel,
Thing is, I saw on 2 artist webpages at the bottom “Centreal by Northeme. Powered by WordPress.” I followed the links, bought Centreal and WordPress, in order to do something similar…but now it can’t be done anymore? Here are one of the sites; look at the bottom of the page: http://www.makiwamutomba.com. Maybe I am misunderstanding how things work (you must have gathered, I am on very unfamiliar territory!)

    Hi there,

When you see the message “Powered by WordPress” it means the site is using the free, open-source software from WordPress.org, hosted with another website hosting provider. That’s different from sites hosted here at WordPress.com, which specifically mention WordPress.com at the bottom. You can see an example on your site here: http://munromunromunro.com/

We have more information about the differences between self-hosted sites using WordPress.org and sites hosted here at WordPress.com on this page: WordPress.com and WordPress.org

One difference is how themes work. You can purchase and upload themes to self-hosted sites using WordPress.org, but themes can’t be uploaded here at WordPress.com. With a site hosted at WordPress.com, you’ll need to choose one of the themes from our theme showcase:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/

Please let me know if you have any other questions about that. :)
