Do I need “wordpress hosting” to host wordpress?

I am a beginning wordpress user and am unsure about wordpress hosting. Some hosting sites (for example, Godaddy) have hosting plans and then they have wordpress hosting plans. do I need the special wordpress hosting? Is it possible to host a wordpress site without having special wordpress hosting?

You don’t need WordPress-specific hosting, just a hosting package that meets the requirements.

    PHP 5.4 or greater

    MySQL 5.5 or greater

The mod_rewrite Apache module (to enable Pretty Permalinks)

When you buy a paid wordpress.com plan, you don’t have to take yourself about upgrade, updates, security, … WordPress.com takes care of this for you.
When you take your own hosting at e.g. Bluehost or Godaddy, you must take care yourself about security, …

  • Hi @meerabejaz19

To expand on what @staartmees shared, WordPress.com is a bit different from other WordPress hosts in that we are a fully managed service. All you need to do is sign in to your WordPress.com account and focus on creating/managing your site(s) and we take care of the rest.

It is also possible to “self-host” your own WordPress site, so what other hosts provide is essentially a more do-it-yourself experience that is a bit more advanced (and probably more difficult if you are just starting out) and requires you to manage your own security, software updates, and does not come with support so you usually need to find help on your own for any issues that come up with your site.

On WordPress.com we take care of those things for you, so if you are just starting out you may find it easier to do so here, and if you have questions we’re also here to help if needed. It’s also good to know that you can easily export what you have here and move to another WordPress host, so if you decide to level up at some point and manage your own site fully, that is always an option.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
