Do I really need to wait 60 days to be able to add plugins to my site?
-
Hi,
So I just got my WordPress blog a few days ago. I wanted to add plugins but see that WordPress doesn’t support this. So I signed up for BlueHost in order to be able to use Plugins. Now it says I have to wait the remainder of the 60 days to transfer the domain over to BlueHost. So can I not add plugins until the domain is transferred? My dashboard still redirects back to the original WordPress dashboard where I am unable to add Plugins or even install a new Theme. Some help would be great.
Thanks.

Yes.
If you would like to completely transfer your domain to another registrar, you must wait 60 days from the original purchase date. This is standard across all registrars. It is a rule set by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). See the Transfer to Another Registrar section of the Domain Management help page for detailed instructions. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#transfer-to-another-registrar
From: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/cancel-domain/#transfer-a-to-another-registrar
There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.COM blogs and we cannot install individual plugins or any themes into them The themes found on the internet are for wordpress.ORG installs which run on different software.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/Have you gone through the process of installing your WordPress.org install yet? See here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

Also note that we do not provide support for WordPress.org installs for self hosting here on the WordPress.com support forum. You must post to http://wordpress.org/support to get support for your new WordPress.org install.

Actually, the answer is “no”, you don’t need to wait 60 days. From
http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org …If it has not yet been 60 days, you can still update your nameservers and point them to your new host [ http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#update-name-servers ]

@airodyssey
You’re right. Thanks so much for the correction. There’s nothing stopping this blogger from setting up his wordpress.org install and installing plugin into it.@shroudanddirk
I apologize for getting sidetracked re: transferring your domain registration. That part of my comment stands. The word “no” is wrong. The rest of what I posted is correct. Sorry :( -
No problem :-) The line between “changing domain name registrar” and “changing hosting provider” is very thin sometimes and understandably, many hosting providers ALSO want to be your domain name registrar.

Thanks for the quick response.
I will have to just get a new domain with BlueHost and start over from scratch. It’s unfortunate that I had no idea about this 60-day waiting thing.

Ok, changed the WordPress nameservers to my BlueHost nameservers. Will check back in a few hours to see if the changes have gone through.
Thanks!

Well it’s been about 5 hours. (says it usually takes about 2 hours, but can take up to 48) my .ORG/wp-admin/ site is still redirecting to the original wordpress.com dashboard. I’m wondering if there’s something else I have to do to stop this from happening besides just changing the nameservers?

Changes if done correctly can take 24 to 72 hours to migrate across the internet. You can also have local ISP caching issues and other routers that you used to visit the original site.
The name servers are changing: http://www.whatsmydns.net/#NS/cloak-and-dagger.org
Did you have BlueHost to do the required mapping on their end?
