Do I still need hosting? I need to use FTP and opt-ins

  • Unknown's avatar

Do I still need Bluehost or similar for my website?
I need to install opt-ins and use FTP and I recently got FileZilla.
However, it asks for my hosting user and password and I have no idea where to find it or if I have to pay a hosting company just to get FTP going…

I really thought that by hiring WordPress I would have hosting already…

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

Here at WordPress.com, we offer completely free web hosting. However, for security reasons, we do not allow users FTP access to their WordPress.com site. What exactly are you trying to transfer?

It is also not possible to install plugins on WordPress.com, for security reasons. Plugins can only be installed on self-hosted WordPress blogs. If you are wondering how WordPress.com differs from WordPress.org, this support article explains the distinction:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Let me know if I can answer any other questions!

    Thanks for the reply.

I have read about the differences.

I may be speaking out of inexperience here, but to my mind aren’t we more limited once we cannot use FTP?

I have big plans for my website like offering e-books and etc and I want to be able to use top Opt-ins and manage my subscribers effectively, like people do with mail chimp.

I want to know if that is all possible and available or if I will really be this as limited as I find myself now.

Should that be a “Yes” of some sort than not only I am disappointed, but also will need to look for companies that provide me with more possibilities.

upgrading to premium is not a necessity and not an option, just in case the suggestion comes to play.

I look forward to a honest and sincere reply.
Thank you very much for your time.

    Regards,
    Julian Vieri

    Hi there!

Not having FTP access is limiting in some ways, particularly in not being able to upload design documents. However, because this is a shared platform, there’s no way for us to offer FTP access without opening up all of our sites to abuse or compromise. There is no upgrade level that would give you FTP access to your WordPress.com site.

It doesn’t sound like we have plugins that would enable you to do what you want. We understand that the restrictions here at WordPress.com won’t work for some users. But we believe that your content is your own, so you can export all of your content at any time.

Here’s some information on the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Here’s a quick guide on moving to a self hosted version of the WordPress software available from WordPress.org:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

There is a 60 day transfer lock on newly registered domains, but you have other options while you wait that out. I’m happy to help you redirect your domain to point to your new host.

    Change a Domain’s Name Servers

You’ll need to obtain the nameserver values from your new host. You should be able to find them on their support documentation, or contact them and ask for the information. (Nameservers may be referred as “name servers” or “NS records” instead.)

As we only support sites hosted here at WordPress.com, all issues with the new site – including the importing of the file – must be taken to the WordPress.org support community:

    http://wordpress.org/support/

If you’d like assistance moving your WordPress.com site to WordPress.org, we have a service called Guided Transfer that does all the work for you. Check it out to see if it’s right for you:

It is really sad to hear that I am that limited here…especially after the refund period is long gone…

I’ll check some of the links you have shared with me, but I am definitely out as soon as I find what really works for me.

Thanks for the thorough information you have provided and for your attention and time.

    regards,

I can still refund your Premium plan for you, minus the charge for your domain registration. Just let me know if you’d like me to go forward with that.

And once you get your new host set up, just let me know and I can help you get your domain set up with your new site.

  • Unknown's avatar

I am glad to hear the refund is still possible.

In light of that, I am wondering if this could be deduced in the guided transfer method, which I really found interesting for my case.

Also, the new host I have in mind is HostGator, but the Brazilian one, because that’s where I am from and so is the public I wish to work with.

Please let me know if it is possible and also if the fact that I’m in Brazil changes anything.

    Thanks in advance!

I can definitely refund and give you credits which can be applied to your purchase of the Guided Transfer upgrade.

The transfer team can try it with the Brazilian HostGator, however they’ve had mixed success with subsidiaries.

Let me know what you’d like to do!

  • Unknown's avatar

As for “giving me credits”, how exactly does that work, given that I have already fully paid my credit card company?

As for the transfer, please elaborate on the “mixed success” bit?

I need as much info as possible before we can carry on.

    Thanks for understanding.

  • Unknown's avatar

I can credit your account with the cost of the Premium upgrade minus the cost of the domain registration. These credits will then be deducted from your next purchase. Or I can just issue a refund of the amount instead.

We’ve only had a few of these requests come through. At least one of them has gone perfectly fine, but another was refunded. If we’re not able to transfer your site, we’ll refund your purchase.

Does that clear things up? Let me know if you have more questions!

  • Unknown's avatar

It would be better if you could send me the bill with the difference, i.e., the refund minus the guided transfer cost.

this way I would just pay the difference instead of needing a next purchase.

I wish to proceed with the guided transfer to HostGator Brazil.

Please walk me through the steps.

    Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

Great! I’ve credited your account for $73 and removed the Premium subscription. You can purchase the Guided Transfer here:

    http://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/guided-transfer/

Once purchased, one of the Happiness Engineers on the transfer team will contact you via the email address associated with your account.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to move on asap but I didn’t get the last part.

    I’m sure I paid $99. Why did I get a $73 credit?

So, once this question is out of the way and I pay the the $129 guided transfer, the value on the bill will be $129 minus my credits, is that correct?

  • Unknown's avatar

Actually, I just contacted HostGator Brazil and I was informed by them that they can also perform the migration once for free.

Given that I’ll have to pay their hosting anyway, wouldn’t I be spending unnecessary money with a guided transfer?

What’s the difference between them taking care of my migration for free and your paid guided transfer?
    Please let me know.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’m sure I paid $99. Why did I get a $73 credit?

You did pay $99 for the Premium upgrade. But since you’re keeping the domain your registered, I subtracted $26 for the private domain registration. Leaving $73 for refund.

So, once this question is out of the way and I pay the the $129 guided transfer, the value on the bill will be $129 minus my credits, is that correct?

Correct! So your charge for Guided Transfer will be $56.

What’s the difference between them taking care of my migration for free and your paid guided transfer?

I’m not sure what HostGator does in their transfer process so you’ll have to compare for yourself and figure out which one suits your needs better.

Through our Guided Transfer upgrade we will install WordPress, transfer your content, install and configure Jetpack, configure and test permissions so that you have access to one click plugin installs, set up your domain to point to your new service, and be available to answer questions and provide guidance for two weeks after we’ve got you set up.

The way we transfer your site, your readers shouldn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. And all of your followers and stats are transferred over as well.

Here’s more information about Guided Transfer as well as answers to some frequently asked questions:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/

If you’d prefer, we also have a guide for you to transfer your site yourself:

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh I see…I completely forgot about the domain value subtraction, sorry for that.

The guided transfer does sound better.

One final point (hopefully) before we proceed with the guided install:

I clear understand this part on the guided transfer link:
    “Does the price include hosting?
No, you will still need to pay your new host.”

With that in mind, it is clear to me what happens once I pay you for the guided transfer – does HostGator Brazil contact me?

Do I have to pay them first? Please shed some light so we can finally seal the deal.

Thanks for all the patience and clarification so far!
I’ll make sure to put a good word on your service and skills!

HostGator will not contact you. You will need to set up an account with HostGator before our guides can move your site though. You can create a hosting account with HostGator Brazil here:

    http://www.hostgator.com.br/

Or, if you have questions about the hosting, you can wait until your guide contacts you and ask them about it before purchasing a hosting plan.

As always, let me know if you have further questions! :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Ok!
I’ll get it done tomorrow and and let you guys take care of things for me ;)

    thanks!

    I am good to go!
I just set up an account with Hostgator Brasil.

What’s next now that I have an account?

I received the “Rate your support experience” email and I’ll reply once we see this through.

    Thanks again!
