Do invitees have to have wordpress accounts to accept an invite?

  When I invite people from my blog dashboard.
  They receive an email
  The link directs them to a wordpress signup page

  Do invitees have to have a wordpress account to participate in my blog if I invite them?

  Yes they do. That is how wordpress keeps track of who you have invited and who you have not. They do not have to sign up for a blog, just for an account (username and password) using the email address that you used to invite them.

  In general, if you have a private wp.COM blog:
  Yes, they need to have a wp account. But they do not need to have a blog. Sign-up for an account at wp.com (or wp.com blog) is free.

  Sorry to be a dissenting opinion guys, but check under settings: In the drop down “discussion” page, “other comment settings”, on your dashboard. You may be able set it to require sign up, an email address and name, or anonymous posting.
  I have mine set so guests are not required to have a WP account.

  If you want someone to be able to comment without signing up then look on your Settings > Discussion page and be sure that
  ‘Users must be registered and logged in to comment ‘
  is UNchecked.

  If you want someone to actually write for your blog, to be able to login and approve comments and other tasks then you need to:
  1 . Invite them to wordpress.com. You can use the Invites or just ask them any other way – the result is the same.
  2 . Once they have signed up you then go to your Users page and add them using their email address.
  Neither will work unless you do both.

  And if you do add someone be sure you really trust them before making them Admin. An Editor is probably enough.

  rossfromwashington, that information is about comments on a public blog. The OP is talking about a readers for a blog which is entirely private. Different issue entirely.
