do my categories have to be in alphabetical order?

  it’s wired that way, yes. unless you don’t mind putting numbers in your categories so you can determine which category comes first. you can also check out http://faq.wordpress.com they may have more to say about it and maybe offer alternatives.

  The only real away around that is to copy the code out of the category widget and place it into a text widget in the order that you want them in.
