Do premium templates have the free advertising at the bottom?

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like to know whether or not the following advertising is on the premium templates:

“Create a free website or blog at WordPress.com. | The Connect Theme.”

We are on the way of creating a world class website for our fortune 500 clients and we are not interested in having the word FREE on our site.

    Thank you,

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

yes the footer credits must remain – even the VIP sites that start around $ 30,000 / year need the footer credits

    Here is more complete info

    Current Terms of Service:

    11. Attribution. Automattic reserves the right to display attribution links such as ‘Blog at WordPress.com,’ theme author, and font attribution in your blog footer or toolbar. Footer credits and the WordPress.com toolbar may not be altered or removed regardless of upgrades purchased.

May I remove the Admin Bar, credit links such as ‘Blog at WordPress.com’, theme, font, or toolbar links?

All WordPress.com bloggers are required to maintain the Admin Bar (the dark bar that appears at the top of WordPress.com sites when logged in) as well as credit links, even our VIP bloggers. Please do not hide or alter text or links for the footer credits or the toolbar. Modifying the style of the footer text (i.e. colors and font size) is fine as long as it’s still readable.

First of all thank you for your help.

I am okay with the website displaying the name of the template and the WordPress ad. What I am not comfortable is with having the word FREE on our site.

Does that disappear with the premium plans? I am only asking about the “Create a free website or blog at WordPress.com. | The Connect Theme.” line and not the “Blog at WordPress.com. | The Connect Theme.”

    Thanks again,

Some themes do not include the word “free”
    for example:
Blog at WordPress.com. | The Ubud Theme.
Blog at WordPress.com. The Expound Theme.

  • Unknown's avatar

Actually, The Connect theme does not include the word “free”
Blog at WordPress.com. | The Connect Theme.

    Great!

Thanks for your help. I will go ahead and continue working in WordPress then.

The new “Free” in the footer is not universally liked by many (including myself) – I think it makes things look a bit tacky

On the good side – I don’t think many people look at the footer or pay attention to it

  • Unknown's avatar

I just went back to my test blog wearing ubud theme and now it says, “Create a free website or blog at WordPress.com. | The Ubud Theme. “

I know I simply copied and pasted what I showed you above, and it seems to have changed??? :/

I’ll modlook this for staff to take a look. Maybe I’m just too tired and made some silly mistake.

The free message changes every time the page is refreshed.

I agree with auxclass, I understand if only the free formats had it, but as a paying customer now I am reconsidering it.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @Tess

I think the “Free” is like crabgrass – spreading like fungus – I think they should rethink the tacky part

  • Unknown's avatar

For the staff – how about fixing the footer – if someone has any paid upgrade (domain mapping, CSS etc.) – flip the Free off and have the old “Blog at WordPress.com” that we have had for some years

    @auxclass

    Gosh! Now it’s even worse:
“Create a free website or blog at WordPress.com. | The Ubud Theme. ”

  • Unknown's avatar

Very very tacky, cheap, unbusiness-like, tasteless, vulgar, rude, trashy, cheesy, and insulting to a serious blogger.

But Mike, you are probably right:

On the good side – I don’t think many people look at the footer or pay attention to it

It’s like an annoying itch that won’t go away. Or the cat MEOWing to go outside at 3 a.m. so you can’t get back to sleep… ≥^!^≤

Like crab grass – there goes the neighborhood :(

    @galois,
I have been sort of away for a while but I agree with raincoaster’s comment in your first link:

I mean, Jesus. That just looks hella low-rent.

That was a couple of months ago and I suppose no one really paid attention to their footers. I suppose it’s relatively minor. And as Mike said, who looks at the dregs at the bottom…
I guess from your second link that someone thought the number of click-throughs was worth the effort to add the crab grass to everyone’s blog…
May could be we will soon see another paid upgrade to get rid of “free.”

  • Unknown's avatar

While not a lot of folks look at the footer – the Infinite Scroll does put the footer in your face – it’s the low rent thing that I don’t like –

and in those threads we were very civilized and were constrictive – nobody called the staff idiots or Matt money grubbing

and we do see folks objecting to the “Free” low rent look – most folks I know don’t want to be seen in public with someone dressed like a cheap street walker or a pimp – they like a bit more class & the old footer did have more class

  • Unknown's avatar

    “Low-rent!”
    vs
    “FREE”

What is that saying about “no free lunch?”

At this point, for me, it’s just another annoyance about WordPress.com. I don’t know what motives are behind this change, but you are right: it is not very polished.
