Do some themes not have widgets?
-
Hello,
I wanted to add a subscription widget to my blog, but I can’t even find widgets in my toolbar! Do some themes not have widgets? Or does the premium plan not allow access to widgets?
Thanks, NancyThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If available widgets should be featured in your Customize menu. The Russell theme is a very minimalist design so it is quite possible that you’d need to change themes to add widgets.

Hi there, depending on theme, you might need to enable footer widgets in Appearance>Customizer>Content Options. I think this is mostly on Seedlet child themes. https://wordpress.com/themes?s=seedlet
Also many widgets have been converted to blocks that you can add directly in your posts and pages.
Hope that also helps.

Thanks @justjennifer. Being old I forget there are things called blocks now

Thanks, all! I did stumble upon subscription blocks, but I was hoping to add a widget to “set it and forget it.” I will see if I can find another theme that has widgets…

@themagicrobot “Being old I forget…” Been there, done that, what’s that you say about a t-shirt? 😉
@fancenance If you click on the Seedlet search I gave above or even search for “widget” in the theme showcase https://wordpress.com/themes?s=widget that should give you a selection of themes that have a footer or sidebar area that you can add either widgets or blocks to.For the subscription thing:

or when you are in the Customizer>Widgets, look for adding a Legacy Widget>Follow Blog Widget, though I don’t know how long or if that is going to be available going forward since the Subscription Form block appears to replace it.If you want to give the Subscribe option a little more prominence on your site, you can add the Subscription block to a page and then add the Page to your site’s navigation menu.
Hope that also helps.

@fancenance, @justjennifer, @themagicrobot,
Hi folks.
or when you are in the Customizer>Widgets, look for adding a Legacy Widget>Follow Blog Widget
The Follow Blog widget, which has been retired, still works. However, as indicated in this post in the recent topic I started, Questions regarding “Follow Button” and “Follow Blog” legacy widgets, I don’t find it among the available widgets at Customizer > Widgets. A workaround I discovered, and described in the same post in that topic, is that it is possible to copy and paste a Follow Blog widget that I had created years ago into any widget area on the same or another site, and then edit it accordingly.
The Follow Button widget is another option, as indicated in the same topic, AND it is still among the available widgets.

Glad to help! : )
Aside from the Follow Blog Widget, Follow Button Widget, and Subscription Form Block, another option is the Blog Subscription Shortcode. This was evidently designed to provide a means of inserting a subscription button into a post or page, but it can also be inserted into a widget area via the Shortcode Block.

Hi @fancenance,
To add to what @justjennifer noted, you can also add a Subscription Form Block by going to Appearance → Widgets.
If you need a hand with adding that, please keep in mind that with your Premium plan you also have access to live chat support. Here’s how you can access that: https://wordpress.com/support/live-chat/#how-to-access-live-chat-support
Hope that helps!
