Do themes restrict photo size?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I asked a question on here yesterday but haven’t gotten any help or replies yet.

    I was hoping to increase the size of the photos on my blog but haven’t been able to. Does anyone have any tips? Do I need to change themes (I’m using Hemingway rewritten) or do I have to buy a theme to get bigger photo ‘space’ maybe?

    I wasn’t sure if maybe a theme will only allow certain sizes of photos. I’ve made them max size after uploading, changed the settings (under media) and even tried to add some code but didn’t work. My photos still look way too small and I’m not too happy with how it looks.
    My blog is theroadtripcowgirl.com

    If anyone has any advice, I’d greatly appreciate it. Thank you! :D

    Howdy,

    You can increase photos in a couple of ways.
    1. If you have WordPress Premium you can use the CSS in your customizer to increase the size of all photos with the following code:

    .entry-content img[class*="wp-image"] {
        max-width: 110%;
        height: auto;
    }

    Adjust the 110% as needed.
    2. If you click on a photo in a post it should bring up a pencil icon. After selecting that, you should be prompted to enter a custom size.

    3. If you use your text editor you should be able to edit the width and height of individual photos by changing the number in the HTML.

    Oh great, thank you so much for your reply and advice.

    Is wordpress premium where you pay to upgrade? I may do that if it looks like it’s worthwhile. My blog is still fairly new, so I thought I’d see how it goes before spending money to snazz it up more :D

    I have tried to enter a custom size in the photo edit button (almost dbl what it was) and the picture looks the exact same size when I viewed my post…which is why I wondered if the theme won’t allow any large photos. It seems no matter what the size of the photo I upload is, or set as in the edit area, it’s only allowed to be a certain (small) size. Since my blog is a travel site to (hopefully) inspire people to travel, the pictures are pretty important I think. So for that reason, I’d love for them to stand out more.
    I will try editing the size in the text area and see if that will work!

    Thank you again!!!

    Please give us a direct link to a post where your photo is too small, and tell us how large you are trying to make it, and what format it shows when you inserted it (thumbnail medium large full size) . Don’t buy anything yet.

    If you can edit the CSS in your Customizer you have WordPress Premium.

    I just tried to change the size in the text area and it made no difference when looking at the post.
    Here is the post and photo I’m trying to change (first picture in that post). http://theroadtripcowgirl.com/2015/01/17/wine-tour-in-niagara-on-the-lake/
    The pic was 676 x 507, I changed it to 1076 x 907 so nearly double and it looks the exact same. it’s also at max size too when I tried to edit photo after uploading.
    Thanks for looking into it and helping me guys! Much appreciated :D

    Yeah I don’t have the premium version, I don’t think pcosta88. Pretty sure mine is just a basic wordpress site. I’m only editing in the text section instead of visual to change the photo size. Don’t use CSS at all.

    When you went to edit the HTML in the text editor did you try adjusting the height and width after the alt=”assortedkingston-312 statement? You may also try clearing your browser’s cache if the adjustment does not show in the visual editor.

    Quick Specs (all measurements in pixels):
    The main column width is 676.
    The sidebar width is 286.
    The footer widget area widths are 312.
    Featured Images are 676 wide by unlimited height on Sticky posts, and 1280 by 416 as header images on single posts and pages.

    Your images in posts and pages cannot be wider than the space allowed to posts and pages is.

    Hi Pat,
    Hope you have a good week. I’m out of this thread now. It’s all yours. :)

    Yes I did change the numbers after the assorted kingston part. I also just cleared my history and cache and it doesn’t seem to have made a difference.

    Mnnn….thanks Timethief for finding that, so I’m guessing that must mean that I’m not able to make my photos any larger at all because of the theme restriction then? I figured that was going on. Esp because my photos that are more tall are much bigger than my regular/horizontal pics. Since I do add a lot of horizontal, landscape pics, the problem I’m restricted in width I guess?

    Is there a way of finding a good theme that allows for bigger photos, yet not necessarily just a photography themed site (as I like a combo of writing and pictures in posts)? Sorry for the questions, I’m fairly new here and just learning as I go.

    Thanks ALL!

    I do not know of any off hand that allow for bigger photos yet not necessarily a photography themed site. You can take a look here at the themes and see them.

    For all posts and pages the main column width is 676. https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/hemingway-rewritten/

    By analogy you cannot park a Mac truck and trailer unit in a parking stall sized for a Vespa.

    you’re absolutely right, Timethief. I now know why, I just thought maybe I was doing something wrong uploading pics or setting the sizes. There are many travel sites I enjoy with such large pictures, so I wasn’t sure what I was doing wrong.

    I think I will have to change themes, too bad because I really like this one after changing it a few times.
    Thanks for the link too pcosta, I will play around and see what I can find.

    You guys rock! Thanks again.
