Do we still need to use the paragraph syntax?
-
Hello,
I always work in text mode, and type in syntax directly. I’ve noticed that if I create a new paragraph by just pressing “enter”, these paragraphs are kept when the page is published. So as it’s much easier, is this OK or bad?
If I create 2 paragraphs, one just using “enter” and the other enclosed in
<p></p>there is no discernible difference on the published page.So somehow the browser is interpreting the gaps between blocks of text as paragraphs, and formatting them the same as set in the css file.
So I’m a little puzzled.

Hi and thank you for contacting WordPress.com Support!
I will be happy to help you with this.
I ran a quick test on my dev environment and as far as I can see whenever you are using the Visual editor and add a new line after you save the page you will see each line as an individual paragraph.
So practically the lines in my screenshot here (https://www.screencast.com/t/DcvrjbU0i) have been generated as paragraphs in the code.
You can see the result in the code here: https://www.screencast.com/t/zJVnlkDllr
You can also find the page here: https://wpma20170711.com/test/
So I don’t think you need to add the <p> tags manually. Just concentrate on the writing/eding part and make sure you leave spaces between phrases using the “Return” key.
That should be all you would need to do :)
Please let me know if this solved your issue or if you still need help.
I will be waiting for your response.
Kind regards,

Thanks. I’ve just done a quick test myself. If I work in the visual editor and create paragraphs by just pressing “return” or “enter” and then switch to text mode there are no
<p></p>present.I just created 2 paragraphs and enclosed the second one in proper paragraph markup. Then I previewed the page and looked at the source code. Both paragraphs were encased in
<p> </p>.So it looks like WordPress just outputs pages with the correct syntax. Either adding the paragraph markup or removing it if you put it in yourself.
My concern was whether some browsers might not display properly if I didn’t add the correct markup or maybe if I added it the markup would be duplicated.
It seems like I no longer have to use the paragraph markup multiple times and can concentrate on just writing :)

Hi there, You can mark your thread as resolved and it will stay open unless closed manually by Staff or automatically after a period of inactivity (around a month).
For the long run, it looks like your site is using the open source WordPress software and not hosted here on WordPressdotcom. For help with a site using the open source WordPress software, you’ll want to head over to https://wordpress.org/support where they have more experience with the software you are using. If you don’t have a username on the ORG forums you can register one on the top of that page.
Just to clarify, this support forum assists users of the WordPressdotcom platform. WordPressdotcom (where we are ) and WordPress are separate entities with different documentation and support forums. More information about the differences can be found here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Best wishes.
@mihaiapetrei hi! If you haven’t seen it yet, Staff have written up a great support guide with lots of tips and tricks to help you get the most out of your experience helping WordPressdotcom users. You can find it here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpress-com-volunteers/ Cheers!

Thank you for sharing the support guide.
That’s really helpful.
I did not know that the link exists.
@whitegoodshelp Good luck with the website!Kind regards,

Many thanks. I hate it when threads are closed though. It’s clearly done for a specific reason, but people may think something is resolved until someone comes in with new information or a different perspective – sometimes a long time later but they can’t give the important advice because the thread is closed. Anyway thanks for the help.
