Do you need a .com domain to have a wordpress site?

I have taken over as the administrator for my golf league on WordPress and have been managing it for almost a year. I received a notice on my site saying the domain will expire and it says the previous administrator needs to renew. If this doesn’t get renewed will my site disappear?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi hollytuesday,

I received a notice on my site saying the domain will expire and it says the previous administrator needs to renew. If this doesn’t get renewed will my site disappear?

sandpipertuesdayladiesgolf.com is owned by another user of the site, so they will need to login to their account and manage the renewal — upgrades can only be renewed by the owner.

When a custom domain expires, WordPress.com sites revert back to their free address. All of your content and media will remain in place but people would need to visit sandpipertuesdayladiesgolf.wordpress.com to see the site.

I’ll be here if you have any questions.

Thank you very much, I will notify my golfers and give them the new address.

I can still continue to make posts correct

  • You will be able to with how it’s set up now. I did want to note though, if they let the domain expire it will go through a process where it can be difficult and costly to get the domain back again:

    Domain Expiration

So when you talked to the folks who own the domain, please convey some urgency with getting that renewed in time if they do want to keep it. Cheers!

Hi again, is there a way to make the blog page name change to the sandpipertuesdayladiesgolf.wordpress.com sooner than when the domain expires? We are getting close to the golf season and I would like to notify my ladies so they can get themselves set up now?

  • Hi there,

Yes, you can do this by updating the primary domain to sandpipertuesdayladiesgolf.wordpress.com in your dashboard go to My Site > Domains and click the white change primary button at the top.

For more information on updating the primary domain, please visit:

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

OK thanks, a couple more questions. When the separate domain set up by the previous administrator expires will my ladies need to re-register/follow the wordpress.com blog? I also see the previous Administrator and her assistant, are still listed as administrators, can I remove them, so I am the only Administrator left?

No, they won’t need to make any changes. If a domain expires, the site reverts to the free version which is how things are all tied together. They would still receive notifications from that free site should the domain get removed or expire.

I also see the previous Administrator and her assistant, are still listed as administrators, can I remove them, so I am the only Administrator left?

Click on People from the dashboard and follow these steps:
