Do you need a host or is wordpress enough?

Hi! I have just started my blog on wordpress, but i have been reading up on blogging websites that you need a host? Is that so, and what exactly makes it different from being solely on wordpress?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There are two different platforms. WordPress.com and WordPress.org. WordPress.com is the fully-hosted platform where you don’t need a host.
Whereas on the other side WordPress.org is a standalone software which needs a host to start your website.
