  Where is the documentation related to shared hosting? I need to check how to set environment variables.

  We can’t help as you don’t have access to the environment variables on the wordpress.com platform. A good hosting provider takes care of those things.

  So that means I cannot integrate APIs with a free WordPress plan? If not, what are the options for me? Do I have to build a website locally hosted first?

  A free wordpress.com site, a site hosted by another provider or a locally hosted site are 3 completely different things.

  As you are talking about shared hosting, we can’t help. You must search yourself for the settings of shared hosting
