Does anyone answer questions in the forum, please?
-
I’ve watched how-to videos, bought books, asked questions in the community forum and my questions still aren’t answered.
Very frustrating because I have a deadline to finish the site by.
I first started with a hosted site, put in the plugins (I’m not a CSS or PHP person. Barely know HTML) asked how to set up navigation. No Answers.
Then, got a regular word press blog page because I have set those up before with no problems. But, same question on this one……
Navigation———>
1) set up categories
2) set up pages
3) post in pagesOn this new word press Edin Theme (please don’t send me to their forum because they don’t answer either) I have two categories set up: uncategorized and Musicians.
I have all of the pages set up and menus created for them. But, when I go to post in that page (ie: for example “Musicians”) the post doesn’t show up in page for musician. It just goes to uncategorized and archive posts.
So, please, I am not trying to be rude, I just need those items answered. Have been using word press for years and never a problem.

Thank you.

It seems that you are confusing static pages with categories.
Your posts with the “musician” category assigned are displayed at the archives page https://2015payitforward.wordpress.com/category/musicians/. Your posts with the “musician” (singular) tag may be seen at the tag archives page: https://2015payitforward.wordpress.com/tag/musician/.
The links displayed in your sidebar such as “About 2015PayitForward,” “Musicians,” “Artists,” “Writers,” etc. are all static pages, not categories. Each of them links only to a static page. Clicking on them will never display posts.
-
I have all of the pages set up and menus created for them.
Do you mean custom menus? Where are your menus?
-
Thank you! My menus are set up on the sidebar.
“menu 1” has the:
ABOUT 2015PAYITFORWARD
MUSICIANS
ARTISTS
WRITERSthe 2nd menu has:
PHOTOGRAPHY AND FILMAKING
INSPIRATIONAL STORIES OF PAY IT FORWARD
BLOG
RESOURCESThe Links page, I’m not sure if that was included in the theme or it’s in one of my widgets.
So, with the categories and static pages……do I edit all the static pages to categories? (Except “home” page)
The options are for the pages:
Parent drop down
template drop down
Order (box)What do I need to do with those? Thank you again!!
-
Are you aware that you may display your custom menus in the header area, instead of, or in addition to, in sidebar widgets?
So, with the categories and static pages……do I edit all the static pages to categories? (Except “home” page)
No. Categories are labels assigned to posts. You could use those pages as the top-level links of a custom menu. Is that what you aim to do? That’s possible, but it would mean replacing the powerful category archives pages typically used as top-level links in a custom menu.
Have you read and understood the follow support pages?
Category Pages
Custom MenusRegarding the Page Attributes module options, and Links:
See the Page Attributes, and Links, and Links Menu support pages, and the Edin theme guide. -
I’ve added the categories and I know that they don’t show up right away, so I don’t see them and I’ve added them to the menu.
The pages are in the header area and sidebar….plus, now the categories will be listed in the secondary area.
The pages I’ve all edited to be put in the right category. Hopefully this works, but I know I’m gonna have too many category/pages menus and still don’t know how to post in a page and have it show up.
I’ve followed the screenshots and directions on the pages and have never had this problem before with word press, but we’ll see what happens.???

If you’ve activated a custom menu, and it contains category links to posts with those categories assigned, the links should appear immediately in the appropriate menu area. With the Eden theme, both the primary and secondary menus appear above the title and are opened by a three-bar icon.
I’ve tagged the topic for Staff attention, so I won’t be posting here again at least until one of them responds.
-
…and it contains category links to posts with those categories assigned…
I meant to say, “if it contains links to category archives pages,” which are typically used as top-level menu items. Any posts, pages, and other types of links in the menu should also display. You evidently haven’t activated custom menus, because no three-bar icon appears next to the search icon at the top right of your site.
-
To display a saved custom menu you might have to check the appropriate box at the bottom of the Menu Structure, at Menu Settings > Theme locations > menu type.
-
I see you have created categories, and you have custom menus, but you haven’t added any category pages to your custom menus. It sounds like category pages are want you want to add to your site. Please read this information about how category pages work and let me know if you have any questions about how to get started with them

@ lizthefair,
Thanks. I had to zoom out once to display the navigation menu. But why does the menu display horizontally, below the title. On a test website of mine, both primary and secondary menus are opened with a three-bar icon, and appear above the title against a blue background if opened. If neither a primary or a secondary custom menu is enabled, the default menu does not appear. -

Edin has the option to use a classic menu under theme options. If you choose to use it the menu renders the way it is on the OP’s site.

Thank you both. The website is to launch in 3 days. The Edin theme is awesome on both desktop and mobile friendly, but it does have it’s own design as lizthefair mentioned. Classic and Default.
I’m testing the site now making sure all links, permalinks work and “contact form”.
I may change the categories a bit before launch because of not enough content in certain pages. When posting a new blog, though, Edin theme works differently for me than others in the past. So far, it’s been tease posts and I go to write blog and then mark what category it goes in. But on the pages themselves (ie: posts in Musician category) they don’t show up.
There is just an listing of them on each page. That part I’m not sure I have gotten correctly.
Question: What is a quick draft? and what do we use that for?
Thank you again!

@ ruthieowenscout,
…I go to write blog and then mark what category it goes in. But on the pages themselves (ie: posts in Musician category) they don’t show up.
Your navigation menu presently has only links to static pages, no links to categories.
- The first link, titled “Musicians” goes the page https://2015payitforward.wordpress.com/musicians/.
- The second link, “Artists,” is a child page of “Musicians,” though the default style menu does not display it as a child. The page URL is https://2015payitforward.wordpress.com/musicians/artists/.
- The third, “Writers,” is another parent page.
And so on.
lizthefair says above,I see you have created categories, and you have custom menus, but you haven’t added any category pages to your custom menus.
If you want to display categories in a custom menu, they must be added to the menu as described in the “Additional Menu Items” section of the Custom Menus support page.
-
But on the pages themselves (ie: posts in Musician category) they don’t show up.
This is because you are using static pages. This is your musicians page
If you want the category page to show up you need to add this page to your menu
https://2015payitforward.wordpress.com/category/musicians/
Question: What is a quick draft? and what do we use that for?
It’s a way to get started on a draft quickly without going to the posts view of your dashboard. Generally speaking it’s better to post the way you are now.

how in the heck did I get Artist/Musician category? :)
Dumb question but since I’m in a time crunch, I’ve got two categories listed in the bottom of the pages “Artists, Musicians” and now I know how to post the blogs into the right categories, but how do I get the categories( writers, inspirational stories, resources, blog) to apply to the same area and take “Artists” child page off of “Musicians”?
Thank you!

Category archives pages are automatically generated when you create a post and assign a new category to it. They are dynamic pages. That means if you assign that category to a additional posts, the category archives pages is updated each time, each new post be immediately added to it.
Your artists category archives page: https://2015payitforward.wordpress.com/category/artists/.

how do I get the categories( writers, inspirational stories, resources, blog) to apply to the same area and take “Artists” child page off of “Musicians”?
The first question here has already been answered here at least a couple of times. The custom menus page has various modules for adding different types of items to the menu. Use the Category module for adding categories. Of course, if you add links to the category archives pages and leave the links to pages in your menu, you’ll have five different sets of identically named link pairs that go to ten different pages. I’d suggest, rather, creating a menu item with the navigation label “Pages,” then nest the pages underneath that item, as suggested in the Organize Your Menu section of the Custom Menus support page.
The second question:
How do I…take “Artists” child page off of “Musicians”?
How to create child pages is explained in the Page Attributes support page. To undo such a relationship requires only that the parent be removed in the Page Attributes module of your page editor.
