does changing blog address necessitate changing user name?

I want to change my blog address (people aren’t finding/remembering the blog with my current address) but not sure if I should change my user name as well. The admonishment, ” You will not be able to change your username back,” makes me nervous. If I purchase the Site Redirect upgrade do I check No in response to Matching User Name and not check anything under Discard Current Address? I won’t need the current address if the entire site along with Likes, Followers, etc. transfers to the new address, right? I’m probably making this more complicated than it needs to be but since I didn’t intend to call the blog jmalcolm54.worpress.com when I first set it up (new blogger), I want to be sure I’m following the directions. Thanks very much.

You can change a site address ending in wordpress.com by following the steps here:

You may prefer to change the address for your site by registering a custom domain name. This takes “wordpress” out of the site address. You can register a custom domain name for your site here:

Thank you, Kardotim, but I’m still not quite clear on all the implications. I’ve read and re-read the Support information but I’m still not 100% clear on what could be lost by changing my blog address.
First of all, “if you are changing site address so you can use the address for new site, please keep old address”. I want to change the blog address from jmalcolm54.wordpess.com to sit.stay.read.wordpress.com. (Sit Stay and Read is my blog title which is why I’d like to change the blog address.) Why would I need to keep the jmalcolm54 address? This is a real question and the verbiage confuses me.
Additionally, I don’t want to create a new email address for the renamed blog. I want to be able to keep everything as is, change the blog address and not lose any post or any viewers.
I also want people who have liked, commented or followed me to be able to continue to do so after I change the blog address from jmalcolm54 to sit.stay.read. It looks as though I should be able to do that with the purchase of a Site Redirect, which is fine. Since many of my Followers are via my Facebook link, I’d like for them to be able to continue to follow the newly named blog.
I don’t want a custom domain name, but thanks for that info.

Why would I need to keep the jmalcolm54 address? This is a real question and the verbiage confuses me.
Some users just like to keep their old address for future use. If you don’t want that you can simply choose the option to discard your old address.
Once changed everything will still be exactly the same, only your blog address is different. You won’t loose anything and your current followers will automatically follow your new blog.
