Does Deleting Comments provide more space

I created the blog to keep family and friends apprised of my study abroad experience. I am almost out of the space provided in the free webpage. I am nearing the end of the trip so I do not want to have to pay to upgrade my page. I was curious if deleting comments from my posts would provide me more space to finish posting on. I have over 260 comments and while I enjoy them, I would much rather have more posts. Thanks!

It’s the files you upload to your library which use up your storage space, not the text of posts, pages, or comments. The few pictures I looked at didn’t seem huge—it looks like you compress the images before uploading.
But some of your pictures are repetitious and nearly duplicates, meaning that lots of them are similar and could be edited out. Deleting some of them from your library means they will no longer appear on your blog, but a bit of editing would go far to clearing some space for storage. Note that deleting image files make take a few days until they clear off of all the servers to make space in your library.
The other alternative to buying more space would be to host your images elsewhere and link to them. Note that galleries work with uploaded images, not with linked images. So you could use Flickr or a second WordPress.com blog but you’d have to load pictures one by one and forgo the carousal feature.

Or you could just start a second free blog and link it to the original with a custom menu. Then you’d have a whole new storage space to add thousands and thousands more pictures…

The few Gallery images I looked at on your site were over 4000 x 3000 pixels in dimensions. That is really huge, unnecessary when being viewed online and as you have discovered, will eat up your free storage space in a flash.
Seeing as your family and friends have most likely read your previous posts, I would maybe go though your older posts and see if there are images that you can either replace (which unfortunately only seems to be available in the advanced options for individual images already inserted, not a Gallery) after optimizing them or entirely delete, first from the post and then from the Media Library.

If neither of those options seems possible for you, then I would spring US$20 for the 10GB Space upgrade, which you should be able to see in your Dashboard>Store>Store. That would allow you to continue posting Galleries on your site without problem. If you don’t see that option there, please let us know.
PS: I don’t believe you would have to renew the upgrade every year since in the past when the upgrade ran out, the blog owner wouldn’t be able to upload new images. It didn’t affect the existing images in the Media Library.
