Does domain mapping support https?
-
I have a domain name purchased elsewhere which is redirected to a free wordpress blog. However, the blog only shows up with the domain’s http address and with https it does not. The company that sold me the domain says redirection is not possible without purchasing webspace I do not need.
If I purchase domain mapping from WordPress will the domain name redirect to the free wordpress blog with https?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Not at this time but it’s in the works. This is what’s available now http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/ See here for more https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/recent-change-has-broken-remote-logins-that-redirect-to-non-ssl-pages?replies=7

Okay, thanks. It seems that neither domain mapping from wordpress or redirection of the domain from elsewhere support https…
This is quite inconvenient, as many browsers and sites automatically adjust to https. For example, placing an http address at tumblr changes it to https which then makes it look like the site does not exist.
Is there possibly some other way of getting a domain to redirect to wordpress with https?

Did you read what Staff said here?

Thanks for your prompt replies, much appreciated.
Yes, I have read that article but don’t understand all of it.

Hi there!
Right now, automatic forwarding of your blog to https isn’t supported, and our domain mapping upgrade doesn’t work that way. Sorry about that!
However, whenever you access sensitive areas such as your account settings and admin panel, you are automatically directed to https.
Is there any particular reason why you’d like your domain to be forwarded to https? You may have better luck signing up for a self-hosted WordPress.org blog and purchase a secure certificate from your webhost.

Let me know if you need further help. Thanks!

Thanks… The reason I’d like the domain to work with https is because so many browsers and some websites automatically change http to https. For example, the Firefox /Chrome extension, ‘HTTPS Everywhere’.
I would transfer the domain to WordPress.com and use it with the free account if I could.
The only package with WordPress offered by the host which has the domain is a business package, but all I require is the most basic webspace as supplied with a free WordPress account. I don’t even need the advanced customization, the 13GB etc that comes with a Premium account.
Maybe I am being overly cautious about this https issue? Please do let me know if you have any other suggestions.

Hey there!
Maybe I am being overly cautious about this https issue?
No worries! Security is something that many users seem to overlook when signing up for our service, but rest assured that we take nothing for granted in keeping your account and data secure.

Thanks, but I am not concerned with security of WordPress or any other sites. The issue has to do with whether or not https:// can appear before my forwarded domain name and still display my free WordPress site. At the moment, it only works with http://, and with https:// the site is not visible.
It seems that domain mapping won’t solve the problem, and for some reason the domain name cannot be transferred to WordPress, so the problem can’t be solved that way either.
The only solution appears to be to purchase a hosting package that has many GB of webspace and other bells and whistles which are not required.
Maybe my mistake was that I did not purchase the domain name from WordPress in the first place.
Thanks again anyway.

Hello again!
Sorry for the misunderstanding. To answer your question, yes, your site should still appear with the https:// before your domain name. You can test this by visiting my test blog with a custom domain:
Your browser may give you a security warning initially (which is normal), please ignore it and proceed in viewing the site.

Nope, all you need is to purchase the domain mapping upgrade and it makes no difference where you purchased your domain.
Let me know if you have other questions or concerns. Cheers!

druesome, thanks again, but this is a bit confusing now…
I can see that the andrewds.co domain seems to work as you say, but would just like to make doubly sure on this matter, because…
In reply to my initial question,

We are planning to serve up all wordpress.com subdomains over SSL by the end of the year, but as of now there are no similar plans for blogs with Custom Domains. You can read more about that here:
Hope that clears things up!
