Does mapping to new domain allow plugins/custom themes?

I set up an account with wordpress.com. I also purchased a new domain with godaddy and hosting with hostgator. So I want to change from wordpress.com to my new domain. I followed instructions. WordPress is now detecting the new domain. But I’m being asked to pay an additional $17 for “mapping” to the new domain.

Before I do this, I want to make sure I’ll be able to use plugins and custom themes. I’m confused about this. I’ve read some posts that seem to indicate I need to set up an entirely different account with wordpress.org if I want that kind of functionality, which seems to imply that simply mapping a wordpress.com domain to another domain won’t due. Can someone offer some clarification?

    Thanks,
    Bob G.

No. Domain mapping just means you don’t have “.wordpress.com” in your URL.

    Important Notes Before Upgrading

Same Rules Apply – The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not enable the permission to use advertising, any kind of prohibited code, or upload additional themes or plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com, which means that you will not have FTP access to your files and you will still be required to abide by our Terms of Service.

You want to head over to WordPress.ORG:
