Does my current theme support the block editor?

I’ve had a site here on WordPress.com for quite a number of years and am currently using the Button2 theme, which I do not find under the “block editor styles” in the theme showcase.

Without changing the site over to the block editor, how can I be assured that my current theme and site content (both existing posts and new posts) will work/look as it currently does when the block editor is made the default editor on June 1?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @yarnaholic, Button2 is still an active theme, so posts you write using a block editor will still work fine there. And the switch won’t change your old posts to blocks unless you explicitly choose that when editing an old post.

Button2 will not support full-width cover blocks or the Full Site Editing features that newer block editor themes will support, but if you like your site layout as-is, you wouldn’t be using those anyway, so you should be fine.

    I hope this helps!

    Thanks, it does, yes.

I understand that what you said about my theme not supporting certain blocks or site editing features would be the same for any of the currently available free or premium themes as well that aren’t listed as “block editor styles.” Is this correct?

  • Hi there,

In short, yes. But that depends on how each theme is designed. This doesn’t mean that X block feature won’t work on all older themes. It means that some features of the new Block editor are not compatible with older themes.

OK-thanks. I’ll keep that in mind going forward with any theme change.
