Does my site lose its premium theme when premium subscription expires?

So I just created a wordpress account and chose a .wordpress.com domain. On the theme selection page, I really liked a theme but it’s premium.

I’m willing to pay for premium subscription for a year and was wondering what happens after that? Since, the first theme itself is premium the site has no other theme to revert back to, after the subscription expires.

I’ll be grateful for your insights.

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: No
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hi there,

To keep your Premium theme active you would need to also keep your Premium Plan active, since the theme would be automatically removed when it expires. If you prefer that your site maintain it’s free status long-term (or revert to it if your plan expires) we recommend choosing from the free themes we offer: https://wordpress.com/themes/free/

Typically if your upgrade expires your theme will revert to whatever is the “default” theme for WordPress.com at that time. Currently it’s the Twenty Twenty Three theme: https://wordpress.com/theme/twentytwentythree/

Also I have to admit, I’m kinda curious! What is the theme you are interested in, perhaps there is a free alternative? It’s also worth noting that our Premium plan will disable the ads we show on free sites to help cover our costs, and will enable advanced design customization tools (that you can use on free and premium themes) allowing for a personalized website aesthetic.

Do you happen to have any sites that you are drawing inspiration from or trying to emulate? Thanks for the additional info!
