Does site remain on wordpress.com when we export a backup to wordpress.org?

When moving from wordpress.com to wordpress.org hosted site, does my site remain on wordpress.com or does it get deleted? So, if we move the export and want some time to smooth things out, do we still have the active version of our site on wordpress.com?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

All your site remains here, nothing is deleted unless you delete the files –

to prevent search engines bashing you for duplicate content, set the site here to “Private” and it will wait faithfully here for you to come back

Thanks auxclass. You bring up an interesting point. If we pay for the redirect, does the duplicate content issue still exist?

the redirect will tell search engines and visitors that you have moved to a new address, sort of like the change of address card at the Post Office

But still a good idea to set it to private if you are leaving the old content on it, so after a year or so if you decide to only do the site redirect for a year – the content won’t get re-indexed
