Does "support" ever respond to questions?
-
I asked a question in, what I am assuming, is a chat and it has been sitting there for a long time with zero response. Yet I keep seeing the pictures of the supposed images of the most likely fake support that are supposed to respond to those questions. It keeps cycling through the same small set of images with “so and so responded a few seconds ago” or “this other person responded a minute ago” or “someone else responded an hour ago”, so on and so forth. Then it says under that that the last support person “took a few seconds” to respond. Yet, here I am nearly half and hour later, the obviously fake messages about who responded and when have not changed at all and the “timers” have not changed either.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
I see that you have already received a response to several of those support interactions.
Is there something we can help you with?
-
Haha, yeah, I received a response 6 hours later from what looks like it is supposed to be an “chat” support. (screenshot for your convenience: https://i.imgur.com/b5UTsup.png) Which would indicate near instant response, which is in fact a lie. Have you seen how incredibly small that “chat” window is? The vast majority of the page is empty white space and in the bottom right corner is this tiny window that you practically need a magnifying glass to be able to read comfortably. And it can’t be resized or moved.
Also, none of the responses I have received have even remotely addressed the questions I asked. They were just cookie cutter, copy and paste from some “playbook” in the hopes that some generic response would placate the users.
I have been using a free account for a long time , and I will never ever pay for an account, especially after seeing how incredibly bad the “support” is, and by support I mean volunteers who have no real ability to actually address any real issues and can only ever tell anyone to “go read the support documents” or “here, let me copy and paste from the faq page things that you can find on your own, probably have already read, and do absolutely nothing to actually help”.
So, when logging in to edit and maintain my site I am met with a landing page of sorts, that has completely changed from what it was a few months ago. There is no obvious way to actually edit or add to my site. Rather it is full of pointless crap, like how many views (I don’t care), how to accept credit card payments on your site (I don’t care), and “Master the Block Editor”…. hahaha, yeah, that thing is an absolute joke and the worst “editor” I have ever seen. I will get to that in a minute.
On this landing page ( https://i.imgur.com/nIkuy4G.png ), there is a myriad of useless information . There used to be, front and center, a link that brought you to a page to edit your site, now the first thing you see if a “Stats at a glance”…. which I personally couldn’t care less about. You assume that every user wants the exact same thing and have no way whatsoever to actually customize how this landing page works.
There are only three actual links that give the impression that they might possibly be useful, two of which are completely pointless. The “Edit homepage” and “Add a page” both go to this monstrosity: ( https://i.imgur.com/pjmoSMt.png ), which again is a pointless page that has zero reason to exist. That entire thing could be placed in a sidebar and as a menu option on the “real” editor. Which again, is a complete joke of an editor. On the far left of the landing page is a menu system that is only marginally better and has only slightly more useful information. There is a link that goes to my already created pages, which is nice but also was there in previous versions of this editor, so I am more surprised it is still there and has not been replaced with some backwards way that is buried deep behind multiple layers of menu’s.
Eventually you get to this ( https://i.imgur.com/b6NI71s.png )… whatever this is.. I guess this is the “editor”? With zero editing functionality. Here is the screenshot with captions as to why this is the worst “editor” ever thought of: https://i.imgur.com/ir4txU9.png .

Hahahahah, wow, just like the “editor” on the wordpress site, you can’t edit posts here to fix errors or spelling mistakes. No surprise there, what a bunch of garbage this site is. That last link in my previous response had a typo, it is fixed here: https://i.imgur.com/zZnCyuw.png

just like the “editor” on the wordpress site, you can’t edit posts
You absolutely can edit posts in the new editor: https://wordpress.com/support/posts/edit-posts-screen/
I received a response 6 hours later from what looks like it is supposed to be an “chat” support
If chat was unavailable, it may have gone to email, which is what happened here.
We offer chat and email support for all of our paying customers, with priority given to customers on the higher paid plans: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
I have been using a free account for a long time , and I will never ever pay for an account, especially after seeing how incredibly bad the “support” is
Free support is limited to the forums here where we are assisted by several talented and appreciated volunteers.

So, you didn’t read my post (here in this forum, this is a forum right…) either? When I referred to the fact that I could not edit my post, I was referring to the fact that this medium we are communicating on is called a forum. In a forum there are these things called posts, which is the very thing we are communicating through. I started a thread, it is compromised of posts, just like this thing I am typing right now. So, if I were to have a typo and make a mistake but only realized it after I clicked the submit button in the bottom right corner (another indication that this is a forum and these are called posts), I would not be able to edit said “post” and correct that error.
It is pretty obvious that you just glanced over what I wrote and didn’t actually look at any of the provided screenshots or really considered anything I had to say. Rather, you assumed that you knew what I was saying without actually reading it and posted, or better term would be regurgitated, some drivel that comes from a playbook that you can copy and paste from. It is obvious that anything beyond copy and paste is far more than can be handled and any real actually issues will never be addressed. Such as the complete unsuitability of the supposed “block editor” for anything beyond what amounts to a coloring book for an infant. If you honestly think that any of this stuff would lead someone to say to themselves “wow, what a great service, I am certainly going to pay for this”, you are just deluding yourself. The fact that anyone actually pays for this site is quite amazing. The only thing I can think of is that the vast majority are completely ignorant to actual web development and customizing websites and those that do know what they are doing, if they actually use this site, just completely ignore the blatant lack of tools to actually do anything.
I actually don’t even use the tools on this site, I actually do all my editing in my own IDE for web development and I just copy and paste my code directly into the “editor” here. However, the recent updates have made even doing something as stupidly simple as that an exercise in anger management. How anyone can look at the editor for this site and think that it is a good idea and well designed is not something I can wrap my head around. As it makes no sense at all.

You said “just like the ‘editor’ on the wordpress site, you can’t edit posts here”
When I said “You absolutely can edit posts in the new editor: https://wordpress.com/support/posts/edit-posts-screen/ ” I was referring to the “just like the ‘editor’ on the wordpress site” part of your reply.
I did see your screenshots and read what you wrote. It sounds like you’ve having trouble getting started, there is of course a lot to consume if you just dive in, so I recommended starting at https://wordpress.com/learn/
If you really want to use something like the classic editor, we recommend sticking with the classic block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/
For more details, please see https://wordpress.com/blog/2020/08/13/the-classic-editing-experience-is-moving-not-leaving/
We do recommend the new editor though, and we have some extensive documentation available at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/

Well, here is yet another reason why this editor is the WORST thing ever to be created. I am uploading many images at a time, sometimes 40 or more. I have a 1GB Fiber internet connection, I DO NOT HAVE CONNECTION ISSUES. I upload files to the media section of the “editor” so that I can include them in my pages and YOUR editor FAILS to upload the files. Every single file I attempted to upload FAILS. So, being a reasonable and rational human being and expecting a reasonable and rational human being to have designed and built this “editor”, I would expect that if I were to upload AGAIN the EXACT SAME FILES that the editor would KEEP THE SAME NAME and NOT RENAME THE FILES. However, one of the “genious” who work at the support for this site once explained to me that they couldn’t understand how a person would ever want to upload and replace a file with the EXACT SAME NAME as a previous file. I know this concept is increadibly far beyond your abilities to understand but this is just ONE OF MANY examples as to why it is vitally important to be able to replace an uploaded file with one that has the EXACT SAME NAME.
-
I know you can’t imagine a world where anyone actually writes their own code for a website that is not hosted on wordpress. Like I said above, I WRITE MY OWN CODE. I DO NOT rely on the WordPress editor to write code for me. I just copy my code into the editor. I have many pages that references these images that I uploaded to the media section of the editor. So, I SHOULD NOT have to go back and change possibly hundreds of pages to reference a file that YOUR EDITOR renamed because it didn’t work.
-
You do not have to change any past pages, the editor does not modify existing content, and pages created before the new editor will simply load inside a Classic block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/
As for the image upload issues, first please make sure that your browser is up to date: https://browsehappy.com/
If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.
If it is, please do these two things:
1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.
2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.
Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.

So, something that completely flies in the face of your suggestions, is that I state that the editor renames file when I upload them a second time. That alone shows clearly that the editor works on occasion to upload files successfully. That alone shows incredibly clearly that the editor and uploading files works, it is when it doesn’t work that there is a HUGE problem. So, clearing my browser cache only serves to disconnect me from the editor and causes me to log in again, I have 0 add-ons installed on my browser, so that COULD NOT be an issue, also since it editor does occasionally successfully uploads files that also clearly shows that there are no issues whatsoever with add-ons even if I did have them. So, NONE of the “solutions” you offer are valid in any sense, neither are they even worth attempting as they will do absolutely nothing to fix the problem that is with the editor on your site. The solution is quite simple, but does require some work on the side of the people who actually develop the WordPress site. I know that it is akin to blasphemy to even consider that the developers of the WordPress site could ever do anything wrong or incorrect or even that it could be improved upon. However, the increadibly simple solution to fixing the problem with the editor renaming files that have the exact same name as a previously uploaded file is to ASK the user if they want to replace the existing file or rename it. Then give them the opporutinty to either rename it themselves or let the editor “automagically” rename it for them. I say “automagically” because for most (including the “support”) I am sure this entire process is akin to magic and they have no understanding of how it actually works.

the editor works on occasion to upload files successfully
All I can say to that is that I, and my colleagues, are not able to reproduce what you’re reporting.
That’s why I suggested ruling out a few things on your end first.
Believe it or not, we do read, listen, and attempt to reproduce the issue before replying.
the problem with the editor renaming files that have the exact same name as a previously uploaded file is to ASK the user if they want to replace the existing file or rename it
We’ve discussed this a few months ago https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/images-fail-to-upload-wordpress-decides-to-rename-every-time-i-try-to-reupload/ and it’s not something that we’re considering changing at this time.
-
That’s the problem then isn’t it, you guys think you are so infallible and you can’t even imagine or wrap your head around someone doing something different or let along better than you possibly could come up with.
-
you guys think you are so infallible
Please refer to our community standards: https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/best-practices-community-standards/
Support staff and volunteers are happy to note suggestions, advocate for you, troubleshoot bugs, and help resolve issues. But we do not tolerate abuse.
WordPress is an Open Source project, and since you write your own code and have a strong technical background, you might be happy installing your own copy from WordPress.org with another host. You could write plugins to modify functionality, add patches to fix issues you spot, control which version you use, etc. You would take care of all things tech, though you could ask the .org forums community for help: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

I am not even sure if this conversation is worth continuing anymore. If I were in a position where I could host my own website, I would do it. And I most likely would not use a wordpress based site, if I did host my own site it would be 100% coded by myself. I would show you but none of the sites I created over the past 20 years are around anymore. However, right now I just don’t have the money for it (yes even at the low prices of those super cheap hosting services, I just can’t afford it). So, sadly (for both us I imagine) I am stuck using whatever free service I can use. I have also looked at other “free” hosting services and their editors make this one look exceptional in comparison. They make significantly more assumptions than you do and make it impossible to even use my own custom HTML, the best I can do with them is add a text box to a pre-designed template that is coded 100% in javascript or some other scripting language that serves me zero purpose. Their tools actually make creating a custom web page harder (if you know what you are doing). I lasted about 5 minutes with trying to use some of those other services and didn’t even bother contacting their support as it was incredibly clear from the outset that what I wanted to do was impossible or it would require so much time to make it work that it was pointless. That and there was absolutely nothing they could do to make it possible. So, that being said, even though I have found this entire process to be infuriating, I do keep coming back to it because it works better than the alternatives. There is a complement for you, your tool sucks less than the other guy.
