Does the Able theme no longer support a Featured Image?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi! I switched to the Able theme back in early October. I even wrote a post about my search for a new theme, “From Theme to Shining Theme.”

One of the reasons I switched to this theme was because it supported a Featured Image. But today, the Featured Image no longer appears on the sidebar of the editing page. And, when I went to the Theme Showcase, “Featured Image” was no longer listed with Able. What happened? Did you all change the Able theme? I checked Screen Options, and “Featured Image” wasn’t there any more. :( :(

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The detailed theme description page is here http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/able/ Note that featured images are not listed as a feature of that theme.

View all themes that support featured images or visit the showcase and click Find a Theme → Features, then check the Featured Images box.

Thanks for responding: I am aware that the Able demo no longer shows a Featured Image. When the Featured Image disappeared from the sidebar in my editoing page, I went to the Theme Showcase this morning and saw that Featured Image was not listed.

But Able DID support a Featured Image, as recently as 10/26/2014, when I changed my Image several times. So, yes, I was able to select my Featured Image with Able (pun intended). Able’s support of Featured Images, as of October 3, was one of the reason that I chose it. Something must have changed–possibly on 10/29/14, when I realize that I was not able to choose a Featured Image; in that instance, I was reblogging something, so I thought that was the problem. Today, I tried to change the image for a 10/30/14 post and could not.

Are there any other Able users out there who have used a Featured Image in the past? I will probably need to change my Theme again, since Featured Image matters to me. I know that I am not mistaken about this aspect of Able having changed recently.

This thread has been tagged for a response from Themes Staff assistance. Please be patient while waiting.

Thank you! I apologize for being impatient (and for failing to proof my response). One of the reasons that I changed from the Big Brother theme was that, back in October, Able did support Featured Images. Even if the answer that I receive from Support is, “Sorry, we’ve changed the Theme,” that would provide clarification.

I do not recall the Able theme ever having featured images but Themes Staff can verify.

If you look at my blog in the reader http://sappyasatree.wordpress.com/
the Image that is shown should be the Featured Image that I chose. With my recent posts, I actually used the first image in the post as my Featured Image, so that proves nothing. But, if you look at my post from 10/14/2014 in the Reader (not at the post as you scroll through my blog), you will see that the Featured Image of the Sesame Street Songbook is not the first image that appears in the post. After reading an article in the Daily Post about picking a better Featured Image, I changed it. My posts from 10/10/2014 also features a different image in the Reader than it does when you click on the link.

Well, I am trying to be patient. But I know that I selected a Featured Image with Able several times during the month of October.

Currently, when a post with the Standard, Aside, Link, Quote, or Status post format contains a video or audio embed or slideshow, that embed is pulled out and used in the Reader. Otherwise, it uses an image from the post.

If the post has the Gallery or Image post format, a video or audio embed in that post would not be used in the Reader – one or more images would be used instead.

The way our RSS feeds work is that it pulls and displays the first image it finds inside the post content. When the Reader looks for an image, it goes for the featured image first and then an image inserted into the post — if there are no images that meet the size criteria, it will display the image as a thumbnail instead of a large image.

    Hi there,

That’s an interesting issue you gave us! I have written this entire thing up and put it in front of our theme department. As soon as I have any additional information, I will let you know!

I use the Able theme and suddenly have the same issue. I’ve been using it for over a year and have easily more than 100 featured images. I’m absolutely positive about this because I sometimes create custom images with text AS my featured image (ex.,

. I regularly use the “set featured image” option because if I don’t a video in the post will automatically be featured. You can see a lot of my featured images in the thumbs on my archive page here:

Kinda’ sucks to have a feature one uses all the time suddenly disappear from a theme. But it’s better than a sharp stick in the eye!

@erickuns Thank you for chiming on. I looked back through my posts for October 2014, and only three used a Featured Image that different from the first image in my post. On my iphone 5 and on my husband’s Motorola phone, the Featured Image can still be seen when you scroll through the blog. I took screenshots of the Featured Image with the blog title for those three posts and uploaded them to this page, Troubleshooting Themes.

WordPress people, is this a permanent change or a technical issue for Able?

    Thanks,
    Sandi

Personally, I think the thing to do is simply to put back the “set featured image” menu, rather than send people scrambling for new themes, if it actually was deliberately removed for some reason.

Switching to 2014 standard theme! Forced to go fishing for new themes, and it’s got better features. Removing the featured image was the thing Able needed to do to push me to discovering a superior theme. Switching over will be my big project for today. Another instance where seeming bad luck turns to good luck.

Thanks again for letting me know I wasn’t delusional. I probably need to accept that it is a permanent change. I’ll keep 2014 in mind as an option.

By the way, @erickuns , I quoted you in a comment today: http://lindaghill.com/2014/11/06/day-6-nano-poblano-my-mama-said/#comment-21843 Entertaining post and comment thread.

Sadly, the 2014 Theme, while having some really nice features, like a slider at the top, does not allow one to have less than two side bars, even when you click into a post, so that there’s very little room for actual posts to be read in. I went back to Able. Will have to live without featured images I guess. Why they would remove features is beyond me.

  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry 2014 didn’t work out for you. I can probably live without Featured Images (although I prefer the flexibility of being able to choose any of the images, or even an image that isn’t in the post, as the Featured Image). I keep hoping that the Happiness Engineer who replied to me on 11/2/2014 will offer an explanation. @mightywp Any idea why Featured Images vanished from Able?

It would be nice to hear whether this was deliberate, an accident, a fluke, or what. Best yet would be to fix the problem, and help reinstate our faith in humanity. Hope to hear something soon.

    Cheers

Thank you @timethief . I just discovered something else sad about Able losing its Featured Images: I have two sites, and I like to display an excerpt from sappyasatree on my second site. I wondered why the Featured Images with my sappyasatree posts weren’t showing up for my most recent posts. Then it hit me: no more Featured Images. But look at the sidebar of my home page. Until recently, a Featured Image appears.

I like Able too much to change it immediately. Crossing my fingers for a resolution . . .

    Hi folks,

So here’s what I’ve got right now.

I’ve been in contact with our Theme department, working with them to try and get the Featured Image function re-enabled for Able. Right now it doesn’t look good. Able was not designed to make use of Featured Images and any theme which doesn’t actually use Featured Images in the theme itself may have the functionality disabled entirely.

We’re still discussing it but like I said, it isn’t looking good. As soon as I have a definitive answer for you I will let you know!
