Does the css upgrade allow me to lose the grey nav bar?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi:

I’ve got my blog on blogger at the moment. I’ve been thinking about coming over here for a while now. I run blogger, tumblr (thinking of changing to posterous) and twitter. Basically my idea is to combine all of these into one blog. So I want to have a lot of control over the layout.

Can I just lose the nav bar? Or do I have to do a work round to change the background colour and text (if so, not so good for me)

    Any advice much appreciated.

    Thanks
    Jon

Yep, you can do whatever you put your mind to. Theres a sandbox theme that you can use to design your blog from scratch. I assume there are some limitations to the wordpress CSS, for example, I still cant make a drop-down menu. Anyways, yes you can lose the nav bar.

What nav bar are you talking about? The one at the top with My Account My Dashboard, New Post ? If so, that is there whenever you are logged in to your blog. It gives you the ability to quickly change blogs (if you have more than one) and get to other useful things. It cannot really be hidden, and as I said, only shows when you are logged in to your account.

If your worried about your readers seeing the nav bar
they won’t en less their signed into wordpress.com
    their self.

Sorry I don’t have a answer for you when it comes to
CSS but I’m pretty sure one of the talented volunteers
that knows css may have a answer for you.

The CSS upgrade allows you to stylize your blog, but doesn’t really allow you to change the functionality of the blog. That is set in the underlying theme files which we do not have access to. You can change colors and fonts, and move things around or widen the post area, or make the header bigger, or smaller, and hide things. If you do not have experience with CSS, it may be best to google tutorials and take a look at them, and then use the free preview in the CSS editing section to try things out before buying the upgrade.

You can customise it if you’re good with the CSS. (I’ve changed the colours on mine.) And if you’re really good you probably could get rid of it, but I’m fairly sure that’s frowned upon. But, as others have said, it only shows to those who are logged in anyway.

Sorry, I thought he was talking about a navigation menu thingy that you can delete.

Actually, having read the initial post again, I’d question whether wordpress.com is right for you. If you want ‘a lot of control of the layout’ that’s difficult to achieve here. You’d need the paid upgrade and the CSS knowhow and there are still quite a lot of restrictions. You can’t use flash or javascript or install paid ads here.

For real flexibility, you might be better off looking at wordpress.org.

    Thanks, everyone.

Yes. Its the grey ‘My Account, My Dashboard, etc’ bar that I was talking about.

I guess its not so bad if its only shown on log in to wordpress. The plus side of course is that the community here seems really responsive ;o)

    Thanks

Yes, the community is a huge advantage for WP.com bloggers in all kinds of ways.

Yep, the community is one of the main reasons I stayed on wordpress.
