Does the selected language matter?

While creating my account, I was asked which language I would be blogging in. I selected English, but now I’ve changed my mind and want to make it a french-language blog.
Will my initial selection of English as the blog language bring any negative effects? Why does WordPress ask that, is it purely for statistical/marketing reasons?
Edit to add that by french-language blog I mean that I will be writing in french. I’m not talking about the interface here, I know that’s a purely personal choice.

i think if you had selected french it would have your dashboard buttons and options in french instead of english. so it shouldn’t affect you in the sense of the choice of language you choose to blog in.

We have language stats of course, but that is not the main reason.
If you are blogging in french but leave the language selected as english then your posts will listed in the english listings at http://botd.wordpress.com/
Can make sense to set it to your own language therefore.(It is not possible to have 2 language settings)
