Does Upgrading Keep My followers? How about the URL change and Google?
-
I am thinking of upgrading to premium and having my own domain name. Does this keep my followers and everything I have built on the free wordpress site? Does google penalize you for switching URLs?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi, @drewsdrain.
Good to see that you want to make your website grow! Upgrading to premium will keep everything you’ve done so far, including the followers you’ve earned. You’ll only have access to more features than you currently have in your free plan.
Also you won’t be penalized by Google as long as your old domains redirect to the new one (yourgroovydomain.com).
Let me know if you still have any question.

Hi, thank you. Will the old domains automatically redirect to my new one? Or do I need to do an extra step once I finalize the new domain name and upgrade to premium?

The only differences you will notice are the upgrades. Logging in will be the same.
Hope this helps!

Yes thanks very much. Sorry for some obvious questions – I just want to be sure I know what I am getting in to. When I upgrade to the new domain and someone finds my .wordpress.com link on google and clicks on it, it automatically redirects to the new domain, correct?

Hi, @drewsdrain.
I’ve made some research to double check the information I gave and I’m afraid that changing your domain could affect page ranks particularly in the short-term. Please check the last reply on this thread and you’ll find more information about: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/ranking-when-upgrading-to-a-domain?replies=3
I’m sorry for that. I’ll answer your other questions but I’m sending this one first to have more chances that you have the chance to better evaluate with this new information about getting an upgraded plan and a custom domain.

Oh, how do I log in to the new website? Same as usual? Does it work any different?
If you access your site via WordPress.com log-in page (https://wordpress.com/log-in), yes. If you are used to logging in through dashboard admin using the “/wp-admin” after your blog’s URL (http://youradress.wordpress.com.wp-admin) you’ll just have to replace it with the new URL followed by “/wp-admin” (ex: http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin).
When I upgrade to the new domain and someone finds my .wordpress.com link on google and clicks on it, it automatically redirects to the new domain, correct?
Yes.

@drewsdrain just to add some advice regarding the custom domain and how it affects on search engines. I told you about the short term but I’d like to point that in the long term benefits of having a custom domain will outweigh the rather insignificant hit they’ll take. So, I think it’s worth it.
But obviously is up to you to evaluate it and make the decision. :-)

Thanks all, I upgraded and I just tested on a post I previously published and it immediately converted to my new domain! So, probably should have done it a long time ago.
