Does Widget Visibility work in Sorbet Theme

  • Unknown's avatar

I have 2 Recent Posts widgets at the top of my right sidebar. This worked until I added categories to my posts and visibility to my widgets. Now they are not displaying at all and appear greyed out in my widget list. Any ideas? Should this work?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • I can see the “Member newsletters” Recent Posts widget set to display on posts that are in the Newsletter category, and I do see that widget displayed on your two posts in that category:

    Newsletter Feb 2015

    Newsletter Jan 2015

The “Forthcoming Event Posters” Recent Posts widget is set to display on posts in the Event Poster category, and that’s what I see here:

Did you get this sorted out on your own or is something still not appearing as you’d like?

I think the widgets are greyed out in the Customizer because the widget visibility options are only available in the wp-admin widgets area. So if you need to make any changes to them, you can do that under Appearance > Widgets here:

    https://redgravegardenclub.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php

Just let me know if you need further help or if you’re all set.

Thanks for your help, Kathryn, but I don’t see these at all. I do if I follow your links but they disappear as I navigate around the site. I have tried on 2 PCs, a MAC and an IPAD and I do not see either Recent Posts widget, even if I clear cache

    @ chrisgidd1,
The following advice from kathrynwp is the instruction you should focus on:

[T]he widget visibility options are only available in the wp-admin widgets area. So if you need to make any changes to them…

You just need to modify the visibility options so that the widgets display on the pages, or posts, and under the chosen conditions, that you want them to (and which the theme allows).

That is exactly what I am doing but I only see the posts in the sidebar when I view a post and not when I view pages..why is this?

Also 2 posts should be appearing under the heading “Newsletters” and 1 post under the heading “Forthcoming Event Posters” according to categories selected under Visibility (using WP-Admin area!). Instead they are all appearing under Events.

I have checked everything and it all looks correct. What is wrong?

  • That is exactly what I am doing but I only see the posts in the sidebar when I view a post and not when I view pages..why is this?

That’s because of the way you’ve set up your widget visibility at the moment:

    Widgets Redgrave Garden Club WordPress

I think there’s a little misunderstanding about how the Category condition works, so let me try to explain it better.

    What this means:

“Show if Category is Event Poster”

    is:

“Show this widget on posts that are in the category Event Poster.”

Does this clarify things a little bit?

  • Thanks for your help, Kathryn, but I don’t see these at all. I do if I follow your links but they disappear as I navigate around the site.

That is because your widgets are currently only set to be displayed on three specific posts at the moment, because of the way you’ve set up your widget visibility conditions. The widgets are only set to display on single posts in the “Newsletter” category and on single posts in the “Event Poster” category. Right now, only the three posts I linked below meet that condition.

If you’d like your widgets to appear everywhere throughout the site, you’ll need to delete the condition you’ve set up on each widget.

That is totally clear Kathryn, thank you. It is not how I understood it to work so I will have to go back to the drawing board. Thank you for your help.

  • My pleasure.

I hope this doesn’t add to the original confusion, but I just did a test and not only does the widget with a category condition show up on single posts in that particular category, the widget also show up on that category page as well. So depending on the specific effect you want, that’s something to keep in mind.
