Does WordPress.com Business plan offer staging environment?
-
Hi good people,
I’m setting up a website for a non-profit currently on the premium plan with wordpress.com. I’m recommending they upgrade to Business and will then design their new site. Obviously, their current website eastbaysanctuary.org needs to stay live while I design the new one. Does the wp.com business plan offer a staging environment or a recommendation on how to make deployment go smoothly?
Many thanks,

Hi Jules –
WordPress.com does not offer a staging site.Instead, you’ll add the business plan to a new free site address, set the new site up, and then connect the domain over to that business plan once everything is ready to go live. You’ll probably want to keep the new site private as to not interfere with SEO.
Once that business plan is added to your account our live chat team is available to you 24/7 and you’ll be able to get all of your questions answered quickly via https://wordpress.com/help/contact/
2023 EDIT: WordPress.com does now offer staging options for Business/eCommerce plan sites: https://wordpress.com/support/how-to-create-a-staging-site/

Thank you for the fast reply Liz! This makes sense, but I have one reservation – would the client lose access to their site statistics from their current site since the new website would be built on a separate wordpress.com account? Is there any way to make sure that data is transferred?
Thanks,

Hi there,
No, they would be able to transfer site stats over to your new site. Once you all are ready to do that, contact us and we can take care of that transfer for you. Only staff can make that move.
Thanks,

Just clarifying, you can use WordPress.com to stage a site. We just don’t have a free staging site that’s included with hosting for a live site. Hoping that helps!

As an update, WordPress.com now has staging site options for the Business and eCommerce plans:
