Does WordPress.com involve in Domain Auctions?

    In the support article ‘Domain Expiration’ for WordPress.com Domains, it is explained that ‘some domains may be flagged to be placed into an expiry auction at the end of the grace period. During the grace period, the domains may still be renewed as usual.’ which is helpful.

    But, I wonder who is flagging domains to be placed in an Auction? Is it WordPress.com? Does WordPress.com run domain auction business? Or does WordPress.com work with & share information about domain names registered on WordPress.com with companies that run domain auctions?

    Please note that an auction might occur only in the event that a domain expires. It’s important to note that at WordPress.com, we always enable auto-renewal for all upgrades, including domain registrations, to prevent such situations. We proactively renew domains a month in advance to ensure there are no issues with domain expiration.

    As for the domain auctions themselves, this is managed by our domain partners, not directly by us. We work with a variety of domain registrars, and it’s these partners who may choose to flag expired domains for auction. Unfortunately, we don’t have prior knowledge or control over whether a specific expired domain will be placed in an auction.
