Does WordPress.com Theme Hemingway ReWritten Suport Child Themes?

I’m trying to see if writing or creating a Child theme is possible with WordPress.com – based or written using the theme Hemingway ReWritten.

I am trying to have text scroll around the area where the search widget is located.
Like this link Pic of wehre I want text to be located
where it shows…. the green outline is the current way the text will form. But I’d like to have it scroll either around the search widget or in some way -wrap around that area of the window – still allowing the search widget to be seen and used for searching the website.

I’ve been told by staff that this could not be done with CSS. But I had one reply that a Child Theme might be the way to go.

Can a Child theme do this? If it can – can it co-exist with the search widget to allow it to still be used?

  • I see that suggestion, however a child theme requires the ability to upload themes. That would mean upgrading to the Business Plan.

That would also mean you rewriting the PHP and CSS files that power the page or pages you want to change. A child theme is common for WordPress.org, but generally not suggested for WordPress.com hosted sites. A child theme is basically installing another theme that only uses some unique files and inherits the rest from the original theme.

I’d suggest the CSS option instead.

SO… to upload a theme… or a Child theme… requires the Business account? We have the Premium but not the Business account. Hmmmm…ok.

I got 2 responses to my asking if I can use CSS to do this. The second responder was the staff person (fstat). Fstat said this:
“That’s not possible with CSS as the widgets area is a completely different section of the site. You could choose a full-width theme or even remove the widgets area completely and expand the main text area there. But wrapping text around a widget it’s not possible.”
So according to fstat – I can’t accomplish what I want with CSS.

The first responser (khushbudesailblog) to my CSS inquiry about this stated this:
“You can achieve the result you want. It will be done by changing the theme page layout. It cannot be achieved through simply customizing CSS.
For that you can create child theme and upload in theme section.

I’ve been looking and reading up on Child themes since then (only for about a day).
I had not seen that I had to have the Business plan to create Child Themes. But I believe you – I just have not seen that to date.

Guess I might be SOL on this one…. Dang!

  • I would take fstat’s word on that other topic, which I didn’t read thoroughly. ;)

But you can only install themes at WordPress.com hosting on the Business Plan. A Child theme is an installation of a new theme, essentially. WordPress.com isn’t supporting child themes of their existing themes because you can really only edit the code and upload on Business. Those sites are sectioned away from other WordPress.com sites for security.

To sum up, a child theme is a good option for a WordPress.org site or one on the Business plan. It’s not a good solution for your issue. I agree that picking a theme that better fits your needs would be most suitable.

Thanks darciemg! Guess I’ll look at free themes.
    Will mark this resolved.
