Does WordPress have this level of customizabilty?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am just about to buy and set-up a website with WordPress (http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/organization/), and I want to make sure I can integrate the functions below into the site:
    1. can I place links in the text to other locations in the website such as side bars and text?
    2. can I add more links to the sidebar links menu?
    3. can I add additional header menu bar items/pages?
    4. is there a limit to how many pages I can create?
    5. can I make the front page a PAGE and not a BLOG page (and put the BLOG page at the end of the site)?
    6. on the example website >> the header and footer items are already called out as archives, blog, etc. >> can I change those to other names and create a number of pages that are 1 column width a sidebar list of links (similar to the ABOUT page)?
    Checking to make sure:
    1. it looks like I can customize the colors of the header bar and buttons and headline type if I buy Premium — ya?
    2. I can create drop down menus from all of the header bar menu boxes — ya?
Last but not least: with all the customization I am looking to do — is wordpress.org a better fit?
Many thanks to anyone who undertakes to answer any of these questions!

    1. can I place links in the text to other locations in the website such as side bars and text?
    Yes
    2. can I add more links to the sidebar links menu?
    Yes
    3. can I add additional header menu bar items/pages?
Depends on the theme you choose. You can add pages on any theme, but only some have tabbed headers.
    4. is there a limit to how many pages I can create?
    I believe it’s over 80.
    5. can I make the front page a PAGE and not a BLOG page (and put the BLOG page at the end of the site)?
    Yes.
    6. on the example website >> the header and footer items are already called out as archives, blog, etc. >> can I change those to other names and create a number of pages that are 1 column width a sidebar list of links (similar to the ABOUT page)?
Yes to the first part of the question. I don’t get what you mean by “create a number of pages that are 1 column width a sidebar list of links” but if you mean “can I use a widget to list my pages,” sure, use the Pages widget.
    Checking to make sure:
    1. it looks like I can customize the colors of the header bar and buttons and headline type if I buy Premium — ya?
    Yes.
    2. I can create drop down menus from all of the header bar menu boxes — ya?
Depends on the theme you choose. Having the customization upgrade doesn’t enable you to add this feature to themes that do not have it.

Last but not least: with all the customization I am looking to do — is wordpress.org a better fit?

I dunno. I’d be willing to bet money there are things you require that you haven’t told us, like the ability to upload themes. If the things you have asked here are ALL your requirements, Wp.com should work for you just fine.

Wow — thank you Raincoaster so much for this great info! Very clear and helpful! It sounds like I can use WordPress.com.
To clarify the points that were vague on my part:
    Adding additional header menu-bar items:
    • the info about the theme does list tabs and accordion features.
    • the demo shows 10 menu items on the header menu-bar, but it looks like there’s room for a couple more — if there is room, can I add more?

    2. Can I create drop-down menus from all of the header bar menu boxes?
    • the demo shows one menu item as a drop-down. Is it correct to assume I can add the drop-down feature to any of the 10 menu items?
    Many thanks!

You can add up to the maximum, but only about 40 will ever show in the header, regardless of what theme you use. Using more than about ten pages causes serious navigational problems for users and completely shoots yourself in the foot in terms of SEO.

    2) If you have more than one sub-page or sub-category, you can have as many drop downs as there are tabs.

    @karenslobod,

    4. is there a limit to how many pages I can create?
    I believe it’s over 80.

    I have 869 published pages.

Pardon the zany auto-correct! I will forge ahead!

Really? Oh, right; that’s the limit of how many can be nested in a hierarchy that displays in drop downs then.

    @raincoaster,
Perhaps. I don’t know about that. Actually, I made a careless error there. My published total is 785 and the rest are drafts. Almost 98% of my features are pages, 2% posts. I presently have all the pages in one header navigation bar drop-down list. Have periodically broken it up into several parts. May make another of my periodic attempts to organize them into a custom menu soon. It’s a rather large task, especially since, as I was reminded today, the pages are not always in alphabetical order in the menus page search window.

Are there any free themes with two or more header area custom menus?

None of which I am aware, not at WP.com. And I know for a fact another blogger hit a limit where any new pages he added did not show up in the menu. I can’t find the thread; perhaps he wanted a tab for each one and of course you can’t have that many tabs.
