Does WordPress.com puts ads on our websites?
-
I was searching through a few people’s blogs, and noted a find of a WordPress.com user stating an apology on their sidebar about advertisements. Supposedly, they do not put any ads on their site, so the question is: Does WordPress put ads on our websites?
I’ve never seen an ad on my website, which is why it looks so simple, but if a viewer chances upon my website, only to find ads, I don’t want that?An answer?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes, WordPress.com puts ads on our sites. It’s in the Terms of Service and there’s also a Support doc about it.

The adds are how WordPress.com pays the bills for your “free” blog. How did you think the cost was being covered?
You can upgrade to add free if you want –

@auxclass – actually, Matt has said on various occasions that it’s the upgrades that help pay the bills around here. If you want to read an interesting take on the WordPress.com adsense equation http://gammagirl.wordpress.com/seeing-ads/
@incognitoteenager- a lot of us have adsense “disclaimers” on our blogs or the other option is to buy the “no ads” upgrade, mentioned at the bottom of that Support Doc raincoaster pointed you to, if you wish to remove them entirely.

I have read an article similar if not the same one on the WordPress.com fight against spam. Did not find anything in the your link on the economics of the upgrades, but I have noticed that the No Adds Upgrade is about the same cost as the cheapest legitimate web host costs. Some economies of scale can be had by offering a nitch market – while the adds for any site would be small I would think the number of visitors to WordPress.com would have a fairly large payback for the adds. By not having user adds WordPress.com is not fighting with users for the small amount of revenue from each add and site.
I have noticed that WordPress.com is aggressive at shutting down some types of blogs, literally in a couple of hours. Some of the whiners a real jerks that show up in the Forum when their scam is shut down – not much sympathy for them. I am amazed that many have not read the TOS given that it is short and easy to read.
All in all, WordPress.com seems to have found a model that works well.
