On November 10, 2016, I created a free WordPress.com blog, title educationalevents. Today, November 24, 2016, to my surprise I discovered that an online business BuyDomains.com is marketing my free, created blog titled educationalevents, as a domain that others may purchase. That idea makes me feel scammed, hoodwinked, bamboozled, ripped off. Or maybe WordPress.com can explain to me, where I went wrong? Help?

It seems that you’re a bit confused about the domains. What you got when you signed up with WordPress.com is a free sub-domain. If you want to use a custom domain name like educationalevents(dot)com, you need to first purchase a domain and map it to your WordPress.com blog.

No, they are not related. You can buy a domain from any registrar and map it to your existing WordPress.com domain or you can register the domain directly from WordPress.com
If you register the domain elsewhere and map it to your WordPress.com blog, it will cost you $13/year. Instead if you register your domain directly through WordPress, it will cost you around $18/year to $25/year depending on the TLD you register.
