Domain

    Hello.
I created wordpress account long time ago, under my old (and honestly – lame) username. I never used it though, but now University coursework requires me to create a blog. I’ll use a separate wordpress site for that, but I’d also like to claim wordpress domain matching my username. The issue is, before changing username, the domain appeared as available. Then I changed username, and it asked me if I want to claim it, but for some reason I pressed No. Now I kinda regret – however hope it’s still available somehow. Is it possible to still get it?
    Thanks and best regards.

    Hi tehgm,

Is this for a self-hosted site or a wordpress.COM site? There is a big difference.

If self-hosted, you can check to see if the domain you want is available for purchase by going to a site such as:

    https://instantdomainsearch.com/

If you are using wordpress.COM to host your site you can check to see if a domain is available by adding a new blog under your account. When you add the blog, you will be able to check domain availability.

I’ve a created a short 1-2 minute video tutorial showing you how to add a new blog. It demonstrates searching for available domains. Check it out here.

I hope this helps! Thanks and have a wonderful day! :-)

Hi, thank you for your reply.
It is wordpress hosted. I understand all that, except the fact the domain suddenly disappeared when I changed my username.

Also, when I type the domain I wanted directly in browser, it says it doesn’t exist. Sorry for double post, but can’t find option to edit previous one.

    tehgm,

If I understand you correctly, you have never registered the domain, correct?

If you do not own that domain, anyone might have registered it. If it comes up as unavailable, then it must be registered by another user or by you under a different account. Are you sure you did not register it under another account?

Is it a free wordpress.COM domain or a paid custom domain name?

If it is a custom domain name you can search to see if it has been registered by someone. You can do that at the following link:

    I hope this helps!!! :-)

Yes, it is the free one.
I think I might’ve registered on another account, not sure, however I am sure I deleted the domains from that other account.

    Hi tehgm,

If you registered the domain under another user name and you deleted the site or you discarded that domain, unfortunately, you can NOT use it again. That was a permanent action.

Again, changing a username alone doesn’t affect you from being able to change your site address to match that username, unless it is already being used by someone else OR you have already registered that domain under another user account and/or discarded it.

I just did an experiment to test this and I changed my username. After that I changed my blog address to match it and it was successful.

Bottom line: If it isn’t available it’s already being used or has been discarded. Sorry for the bad news! Hopefully you can find another suitable domain/username combo.

If you have any other questions, please ask.

Thanks and have a wonderful day! :-)

    Hi tehgm,

Sorry I left my last comment under my test user name I created. :-)

Anyhow, I have included a few links to documents that might help you wrap your head around the situation:
