Domain
-
Several years ago I purchased a domain through wordpress.com. I want to move it to a different registrar, but after some digging it seems that wordpress was really just a reseller of wildwildwest registration so I couldn’t get anything moved through the domain maintenance tools on here. They say that WordPress has to release the domain, I haven’t been able to get any kind of answer from anyone here at wordpress on how to or if they can even release it, and all of this has gone on so long that now my DNS has expired and my website is offline.
So I’m trying one last time. How do I transfer a domain I purchased here to another registrar that will actually let me own it?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Our support page provides information on how to transfer your domain to a different host:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/transfer-domain-registration/
Is this for the domain measuredandslow.com? If so, it hasn’t been registered with WordPress.com for over 15 months. From what I can see, it hasn’t been registered by anyone else yet, so you should just be able to register it at your new host without going through us. We no longer have any connection to the domain.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks!

Hi,
The domain expired as far as WordPress is concerned, but it’s still held by a company called Wild Wild West that says they purchased it on WordPress’s behalf. They say they own measuredandslow.com until spring of next year. We’ve tried following the instructions to release the domain from WordPress and get the code to transfer it, but it doesn’t work.

Hi there,
Okay, I can contact them to see if I can retrieve the domain from them. I’ll let you know once I hear back from them. Thanks!

Hey there,
I contacted our registrar and measuredandslow.com is now in a redemption period. You can still renew your domain through us, but it is now a more expensive and complicated process to do so. Our registrar charges an $80 late renewal fee in addition to the $26 we charge to renew the domain. The good news is that this is still a chance of reclaiming the domain through this option.
Your other option is to wait until the redemption period is over so that the domain becomes available for registration again. Domains are usually in redemption for approximately 80 days, but with this option, you run
the risk of someone else jumping in front of you to purchase the domain before you get the chance. Please let me know if you want to proceed with paying the late renewal fee in the attempt to reclaim the domain name. This option is also time sensitive because the domain can be auctioned off to an expired domain bidder.
I would suggest enabling the auto-renew option so that you will not have to worry about losing control over your domain in the future.
Please visit the support page link for further instructions:
Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

If I pay the $106 will I get control of the domain including the ability to move it to another registrar? I don’t know what kind of scam your company runs that you “sell” your users domain names, but then keep renew without permission and refuse to relinquish control but I’ve never been more dissatisfied with any domain, hosting or service provider in my life.

Hi there,
I understand your frustration, but there seems to be a misunderstanding here on how domains work.
If I pay the $106 will I get control of the domain including the ability to move it to another registrar?
You will get control of the domain. You can transfer the domain to any other host after 60 days of being registered with us per ICANN regulations (under 3. Obligations of the Registrar of Record).
I don’t know what kind of scam your company runs that you “sell” your users domain names, but then keep renew without permission and refuse to relinquish control
It’s not a matter us refusing to relinquish control. Again, this is an ICANN regulation that all hosts are subject to abiding by – so if your domain registration expired and went into redemption anywhere else, you would have to pay the $80 redemption fee no matter where the domain is registered. The $80 fee is per ICANN regulations. So, even if we wanted to relinquish the domain for you, we couldn’t. Also, when you pay for an upgrade, it is automatically set to renew unless you cancel the renewal – that information is provided when you make the initial purchase. For more information on renewals, please read our support page:

Unfortunately what you said here isn’t the case.
Yes, we’re a reseller of our register partner WWD, but after 60 days, you definitely could move your domain to another host via your domain maintenance tools here:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/transfer-domain-registration/
Did you try to transfer the domain before 60 days was up? If so, that is the reason you were not able to transfer it.
So I’m trying one last time. How do I transfer a domain I purchased here to another registrar that will actually let me own it?
You won’t technically own the domain registration at another host any more than you own it here. You are only subscribing the registration of the domain on a yearly basis. It would be no different at any other host.
Hopefully this all makes sense. By no means are we attempting to scam you. When your domain expired 15 months ago, you would’ve had to retrieve it from redemption no matter who you were with. If you have any questions at all or if you would like to retrieve your domain, please let me know, and I’ll take care of it for you.
Thank you.
