Hello, I am setting up a site for a client. They are interested in a membership website. I am looking into using wordpress for the site and using the Wishlist plugin for the membership access portion. I would like to know if wishlist can be integrated with the WP Business account at wordpress.com. If yes, can the business account be linked to a already purchased domain? Also am I understanding the difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org correctly… .com is with hosting and .org is download the wp software and find hosting, is this correct? A prompt response is appreciated. Thank you.

  • Hi there,

For what you want to do you will need the self-hosted WordPress.org software instead.

We don’t offer a membership feature on WordPress.com, and it’s not possible to install any plugins here, regardless of upgrade. However, if you install the WordPress software on your own hosting you will be able to install that plugin.

You can find more information on self-hosted WordPress, as well as links to our recommended hosting providers, here:

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thank you for your reply. How can I get chat support with a self hosting wordpress.org? Is this an option? I know you have tutorial, that I will certainly take a look at. But on the spot chat support is really helpful.

I’ve not put together a word press website as yet, I will be using a theme for the site, is it as simple as a drag and drop format?

  • An important fact about self-hosted sites is that they’re not hosted with us, so we don’t provide support for them. For a self-hosted site you’ll get support from your hosting provider, and the level of support you receive usually depends on the plan you buy from them. So you’ll need to consider that when looking at hosting providers and hosting plans for the website.

It depends very much on the theme you choose. Basic content creation (i.e. publishing posts and pages) work pretty much the same on self-hosted WordPress as on WordPress.com, but for self-hosted sites there are a much bigger variety of themes and even theme builders, the latter including drag-and-drop layout editors.

But for those the instructions and ease of use depends very much on the theme/theme builder you use, and support for that needs to be provided by the theme developer directly.

The best tutorial site I know of for self-hosted WordPress is http://www.wpbeginner.com/, but you will find many others if you Google. You can also find the WordPress.org documentation here:
