Aloha talentclean, Mapping a domain you already own is done when you already purchased a domain but want to host your website on WordPress.com. Redirecting a site is typically done if you are changing your domains and want to point the old one to the new one. Redirects can also be used if you were using WordPress.com and are switching to a self-hosted version of WordPress.
Does that make sense?
Here is a little more information about each one:
Mapping a Domain You Already Own
Do you already own a domain name? If you would like to use it here on WordPress.com all you need to do is “map” your existing domain to your site. You will need an upgraded WordPress.com plan on your site in order to map a domain. Each paid plan comes with a free domain credit you can use to either register a new domain or map one you already own.

Redirecting the Site
Are you leaving WordPress.com? Would you like to redirect example.wordpress.com (as well as all of your permalinks) to your new domain name? Have you recently changed your blog address and need to redirect traffic to the new name? The Site Redirect upgrade lets you do just that — and managing the redirect couldn’t be easier.
