I started a wordpress.com account, registered a domain, and bought one of the plans. I realized later I wanted to host on another site and cancelled the plan and my reservation of the domain name.
When you type in the domain name now, it says it’s “parked”. It’s also no longer available on other hosting sites. When it become available again?

When you cancel a domain, it’s usually parked for about 5 days. You can just wait or you buy the domain from wordpress.com and link it to your site elsewhere. Relax and wait till a Staff member comes to the rescue.

Hi @nscottarthur, @staartmees is right; new domains are just held for a couple of days before they’re released. Please let us know which of these options works best for you:
Wait: You can wait about five days for the domain to be released. So long as no one else buys it before you do, you can purchase it again here or with another provider.
Repurchase the Domain: We can send an invoice for the domain. Once it’s restored, you will be able to use it with a monthly plan here, or you can point it to another host and transfer after 60 days.
Purchase an Annual Plan: To host your site here after all, buy an annual plan, skip the domain option, then update us here.
