  my friend said because i have a namecheap domain that wordpress would be free….is this true?

  This is not true. Using a custom domain has always been a paid upgrade at WordPress.com.

  You will need to set up Domain Mapping to use your domain with your WordPress.com site:

  http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
